Stephen Bush @stephenkb.bsky.social · 18/07/2025So much about this story is depressing to me, from the mad understanding of “how the development of racist thought works” from someone who once got this stuff and who should have been allowed a dignified exit, to the way v few official responses even bother to mention racism against GRT people. 1820246
Stephen Bush @stephenkb.bsky.social · 18/07/2025Indeed. Bleakly depressing that we are still on “oh, you can’t tell”. No, I think people visibly think they can tell who is GRT, and we are about to have a prolonged period demonstrating that racism is completely accepted! And they visibly think they can tell with street racism against Jews.Dan Davies@dsquareddigest.bsky.socialIt's "local playing field taken over" season at Reach Newspapers too 10835

Tom Phillips @tom-phillips.com · 18/07/2025Not the main point, but it also feels a bit... big city specific? The relative anonymity of crowds meaning that the only things people have to go on are visual cues as you walk down the street. But obviously in lots of places, information about who or what someone "is" spreads through many channels. 190
Stephen Bush @stephenkb.bsky.social · 18/07/2025The history of anti-black racism also is littered with examples that show that “you can tell” is a mad invention of racists, who produce all number of mad “rules” about what is and isn’t white or black for the purposes of their hatred:ft.comThe search for a new language about raceFrom white supremacism to census ethnicity questions, a clutch of new books enters the debate over racial identity 68912
Max @maxconrad.bsky.social · 18/07/2025It's so bad where I am (Surrey) and it feels near universal even amongst supposedly liberal, educated people. 000
Tom Freeman @tomfreeman.bsky.social · 18/07/2025Saw this delightful message on a local FB group yesterday 020
Jo 🔶 @copperbird.bsky.social · 18/07/2025There was a time (when I was an undergrad) when the largely accepted left definition was racism = power + prejudice 210
Ste Jormur @stejormur.bsky.social · 18/07/2025And it's an arbitrary construct! Eg in Germany there's a vague awareness (at least among media/elites) that Roma were Holocaust victims and you can't be obviously racist (not extending to "Don't call paprika sauce 'gypsy sauce'"), but Irish travellers still get liveblogged by the news like a flood 100
Nathan @nwylabour.bsky.social · 18/07/2025I mean, LGBT+ people are all too familiar with how people behave when they 'think they can tell'. I got picked on and called gay at primary school, before I even knew what the word meant! 160
Simon J @hobnobking.bsky.social · 18/07/2025Do you think being soaked in an ideology that believes Jews can never be repressed because they embody white privilege also factors into this? 000
Alexander Williams @floatinginwaves.bsky.social · 18/07/2025I still remember a Labour MP door knocking with a leaflet about “dealing with traveller incursions” and then posting it to social media. 010
