Mar Hicks @histoftech.bsky.social · 05/04/2026Somebody was talking about how all the single use plastics that we absolutely need for hospitals and medical settings are going to suffer from this petroleum crisis at some point, yet all i see in most publications is concern about gas prices. 18375115
Mar Hicks @histoftech.bsky.social · 05/04/2026And that’s because the plan in any US crisis is pretty much to just let the sick and disabled die, to keep “the economy” running in a way that those at the top keep making obscene profits from people’s labor. 211212
I'm Here Live I'm a Kat @katsharki3.bsky.social · 06/04/2026Oh no. I work in a lab and I'm suddenly considering asking my boss if we should order plates and tips in bulk NOW So many things were on backorder forever during COVID and I don't want to be rationing my supplies again 😭😭😭 160
our lady of the cow parsley @ladycowparsley.bsky.social · 05/04/2026Did you see this? www.europesays.com/iran/22553/ 000
AGTMADCAT 🇺🇳 @agtmadcat.bsky.social · 06/04/2026I'm not sure that makes sense - the ethane that we use as a feedstock is an unwanted byproduct of natural gas drilling, so as long as we're still fracking away in the states the feedstock will remain basically free. 000
Aleksei I. Valentín (he/they) ✡️♿🏳️🌈 @aivalentin.bsky.social · 06/04/2026I remember some Very Earnest dude on Twitter telling me that abandoning single-use plastics in medicine would be easy, because that's what autoclaves are for. And anyone who died from infection/contamination was just a small price to pay and they obviously weren't contributing much to society. 140
The Post Rider @postrider.bsky.social · 04/05/2026I sure as hell wasn't. My lips were chapped, and I ran into the grocery store to buy Vaseline and was immediately in WTF mode. Then I looked at what else used petroleum/plastic, and I got to medical items, like the syringes, PPE, drainage tubes, scalpel handles... even if the Iran stuff 100
Tom Wild @tomwild.bsky.social · 05/04/2026I think relatively few people think about how pervasive petroleum is in our lives. 0171
Matt ”read the syllabus” L @matt18l.bsky.social · 05/04/2026Especially after we worked so hard to bring all that medical equipment and supplies back home to the US after the Covid pandemic. 010
David Hart @hartdp2000.bsky.social · 05/04/2026Liquid Helium is required to cool superconductors in MRIs.marketplace.orgThe war in the Middle East is disrupting helium supplies. That's bad news for more than party balloons.MRI machines and AI chipmakers need the liquid form of the element. 0163
Fiona Cielo (she/her) @fionacielo.bsky.social · 05/04/2026the amount of people who don’t know what products come from crude is extremely high. they probably figure with the education level of most americans it is easier to focus on easy concepts like gasoline 030
Adiamoon once @amandarg12.bsky.social · 05/04/2026Well because we all see gas prices daily. All the catheters, Leur lock syringes, IV tubing and, I can go on for a very long time, other stuff arent visible to a lot of people. It is like the Baxter fluid shortage after Hurricane Helene. A huge deal for hospitals, barely made the news. 292
Sarah Tuttle @niais.cryptoanarchy.network · 05/04/2026I can't help but think about the saline shortage after the hurricane in North Carolina. My infusion center had to use a whole different protocol that was less effective and more intensive because like one factory was off line. And so much has been moved to plastics. Medical. Food safety. So much. 56911
J.E. Turcotte, re: Valjurai @valjurai.bsky.social · 05/04/2026If we relied less on hydrocarbons for fuel, could some of these plant based sources be an alternative? Corn ethanol was always a lil dumb as a fuel but maybe not as a polymer base? 340
