We should teach more of this electrical stuff to produce better engineers - to bridge the gap of that naive stuff in school (nice square waves marching as binary numbers down wires) to real scope traces of balanced signals with resilient encoding. It is, after all, rocket science.

You could also wire up a grounded outlet 120 volt wall plug to a cat5 cable. Nothing bad would come of that, I'm sure.

Cut 1 more pair and now you have a cable you can prank your coworkers with. One side will show the link up but the other side won't. Good way to waste half a day troubleshooting a switch connection issue when it was a pinched cable with cut pairs all along...

I'm sorry, but after watching this 🔽 I need to know what happens for each of the 2⁸ = 256 possible ways of cutting a subset of the 4×2 wires in a gigabit ethernet cable. Which ones work partially, and in which way? (The 0 and 255 I think I can guess. Video shows one more. What of the 253 others?)

Long ago I had a boss use this trick so he could run half as many drops as needed. This was on only CAT 5, so the whole office ran at 10mbps. Fun times.

My jaw dropped the day I saw an engineer cut off the RJ45 on a Ethernet cable, stripped some wires bare, and shoved them one by one into a JST connector on a UAV. I gained some extra hardware hacking points that day. Pentesters don't often get taught how to open cases, cut things, or use probes.

Bonus: this is how a lot of the old "passive" PoE systems work. Just straight DC voltage down those wires. No negotiation whatsoever. If you read that and thought "that sounds like a bad idea", you're right!
