Lowkey excellent thing about Wikipedia: accurately describing the extremism and lies of right-wingers because its sole concern is provable truth, while the media tiptoes around accurately describing whats happening to avoid appearing “biased” against the extremists and liars

ICYMI, over the past two weeks, English-language Wikipedia editors have engaged in a successful effort to change the first paragraph of the Republican Party entry to reflect its current status as a "neo-nationalist" political party. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Republi...

You mean the same site that Leftist darling Stephen Colbert used to purposely edit misinformation into?

I always thought back then that Wikipedia would work out. I wasn't so good at anticipating everything else going to shit.

Like you can read the Wikipedia page about January 6th or the pandemic or any Trump scandal, and the primary concern of that Wikipedia page is describing the awful thing that happened. Without a quote from a right-winger like “it was fine, why are you still talking about it, it wasn’t a big deal”

Which is why Elon wants to replace Wikipedia with something he can control. “We can’t have any woke truth-based sources around! That gets in the way of my global fascist rebellion!”

It’s a perfect example of how functional and effective democracy requires a culture of democratic responsibility far more than formalized legal systems.

There is barely a day goes by when I don't say a silent prayer to all the wonderful people maintaining Wikipedia as a bastion of truth and facts in a world that's going mad. I just wish I had the knowledge or skill to put my shoulder to the wheel too.

For now. Back in May, Wikimedia disbanded the Community Tech team, fired veterans employees and many others - most of whom were union organizers. RWers don't give up just because Grokpedia or Conservapedia aren't gaining traction. They simply expand their targets and attack from elsewhere.

It really doesn't. The average attempt to accurately describe someone's politics gets you attacked for defamation and original research by the most annoying fascists you've ever met.

Still find the history of the Republican party wild: "The Republican Party was founded in 1854 by anti-slavery activists who opposed the Kansas–Nebraska Act and the expansion of slavery into American territories."

This is why MAGA tech bros have been attacking the foundations and support for Wikipedia. Objective reality that cannot be manipulated is their enemy. If we lead with truth, we win.
