The result is the phenomenon I wrote about the other day: our software becomes chock-full of the loudest, most obnoxious widgets. Product teams copy the UI patterns capable of penetrating executive mind fog until everything looks the same and everything is yelling at you.

You can think of this as post-enshittification. Value to consumers or to advertisers at least provided a link to reality. But as it turns out, the 3rd stage of enshittification (once both users and advertisers are locked in) decays; companies begin to act against even their own self-interest.

It's a real shame that enshittification as a concept became so diluted, because this is a completely separate phenomenon with distinct causes. Enshittification is when companies degrade the experience to extract more value. Experience rot is when companies lose the ability to make a good experience.

Working in insight years ago it blew my mind how the first stage always had to be hammering "Ordinary people don't inherently care about your new widget/brand!!" into the person supposedly wanting to understand their market

Tbh this is part of why I’m a bit worried about self-driving cars - Waymo is safer than humans now, but if they’re ubiquitous, will they degrade?

In the pursuit of higher margins and lower costs companies also immediately begin to attrite everyone who knows how to fucking do anything, so the best case scenario for new products just becomes copy and pasting the old shit with no connection to or understanding of the original design decisions
