You will never be able to make "data driven" decisions until you realize just how much your decisions are driven by emotions: fear of missing out, defensiveness of your favorite idea, apprehension over something unusual. That's because there's no such thing as "the data" - only interpretations.

Emotional reactions, FOMO, defensiveness, peer pressures, mob mentalities, and many other harder to measure and track events are also data points and a hell of a lot more useful than NPS charts and simple “traffic” stats.

The world is not made of numbers. Quantifying is something we do TO it. Our emotions shape how we decide to do that, and then what data we over-value and what data we under-value when it comes time to actually make that decision.

I think it was Hume who said that reason was (and ought to be) a slave to passion. We can know things but decisions are always opinions which are always, intrinsically, based on emotion.

Ehhhhh. You can make data-informed decisions. Doesn't have to be emotional. You can formulate a hypothesis informed by data and test into an answer. You can reduce bias by including many points of view. Data exists. Selection, interpretation, and so on...that's what decisions are made from.

I segment data in “fact” and “opinion” buckets so we can easily identify which is which and tune our models. Ex: “Arrived at port timestamp” is a fact. “Arrived on time” is an emotional opinion, depending on which promised date it’s compared to. “Arrived on time” gets litigated in a dispute.

In my experience, "data driven" was only ever used to mean "data that supports my idea, after I thought of it". Also, almost never from sources external to the org (cited academic papers? Nah. Well researched literature in the field? Nah. Case studies, examples, etc... also nah)
