useful fact: JIS screwdrivers work in Philips screws just fine. Philips screwdrivers will destroy a JIS screw in short order. this leads to lots of stripped screws on old ham radios

If you’re working on Japanese things, (cameras and stuff) they often use JIS screws, not Philips. 👍🏼

Phillips were definitely an upgrade over Flathead, but the fact JIS is not as widely adopted (at least in the US) is a tragedy. The torque is way better.

I went down this rabbit hole a while back. The TLDR is that it doesn't really matter any longer as long as you get quality screwdrivers. The ISO standard was redone years ago so it more closely matches the JIS standard, which doesn't exist any longer or made. escapecollective.com/threaded-3-j...

JIS screwdrivers are lovely things that Just Work Better, because they're not designed with the cam action Philips intended. I tend to use my JIS drivers now for everything because they feel so nice.
