Nex did not see themselves as male or female,” Ms Benedict said. “Nex saw themselves right down the middle. I was still learning about it, Nex was teaching me that.”

“When you’re old school, you don’t always understand it,” her husband Walter told The Independent.

In Native American culture two-spirited (non-binary) people are revered. They have integrated the male and female into one spirit (body). The real irony is that Oklahoma is Indian Territory, a state where Native culture is ingrained into everyday life, superficially it seems.

I think non-Natives need to understand that while what you say is true about historical Native culture and to a degree in modern, the average reservation-dwelling Native in Oklahoma is going to be a Trump voting Christian churchgoer.

I read this is true in Polynesian culture as well. Visited Tahiti 25 years ago and our fav (hotel) bartender was non binary. Turns out that island-wide (the actual Isle of Tahiti, were most tourists pass through), they were considered the wisest of all. They had the perfect job.
