“Thank you, Dr Edwards,” Jo replied silkily. “I see you have made time for the barber and changed out of those same rumpled clothes you arrived in. Are we to presume that you have grown tired of being mistaken for a vagabond?”

The doctor pressed his thin lips so tightly that they almost vanished altogether. The top of his head may be tidier, but his square jaw sprouted a decided shadow and the buttons on his waistcoat were misaligned. As though he had dressed and set out in a great hurry.

He was a handsome man, and could be exceedingly so if he bothered to keep himself better groomed. Straight posture, long-legged and elegantly shaped. The sort of defined, lean build that people tended to associate with authority. Unlike Kenneth, who was angular, pale, and pointy, with a base expression which often led to others asking him what the matter was when he was perfectly cheerful.

“Press the button!” Justin laughed. Glitch watched her expectantly.
Niwa obliged, and abruptly dropped it, instinctively covering her ears. A most dissonant racket erupted. She didn’t comprehend what had just happened.
Both Justin and Glitch were doubled over, howling at her reaction, and the big noise. Silly boys.

“Oh, here, can I unbutton this a bit?” I gestured to her shirt. She nodded, and I went to unbutton her shirt by a few buttons. “You look kinda like a nun. Plus, it’s hot, so I don’t want it to be hugging your neck like this.”
Alice looked at me, her eyes trailing over my hair and my lips and admiring my beauty. I noticed her looking, and asked, “What is it?”
She smiled. “Nothin’. You’re just so beautiful.”
I giggled. “Really?”
“Yeah. I’ve never been in love before… especially not wit’ somebody as carin’ and lovely as you. I hope this never ends.”

Mouth half full, she reached across, scooped his untouched burger up and pushed her plate toward him. He grimaced at the curled up mass of reconstituted, lightly fried potato there, but still stole a few anyway.
The kid had about half a bite left when boots thudded on the deck from the corridor, one set with a clang rhythm followed by a softer clink. Elara and Caul. “Sounds like friends are coming.”
Kaili swallowed the last of her so-called food and washed it away with a swig of cola just as the Captain and the Doctor walked into the room. Elara’s mouth was pinched in a sour looking rictus. Caul managed a smile at them. “Nice to see that you have shown our guest to our finest cuisine.”
He smiled at Caul who had stopped at their table. “Nothing but the best. Kid wanted a burger. This was, well, near enough.” He looked at Elara. “What brings you down here?”
She walked to the dispenser, hit the coffee button then turned to face the room

"The Flipside Of Somewhen" was written ~35 years ago and never published. It's a sort of time travelling Hitchhiker's Guide / Spellsinger mashup (see — that comparison immediately dates it). I have long-held doubts about its merit.

Lydiatt reached into the recess and began to feel around to release them. After some muttering, he began to remove the generator module.
“Do you want a hand with that? It looks heavy,” offered Grey.
“Would you mind? I’ve done it before by myself, but it was an effort.”
Between them, they got the component out and rested it on the ground. Lydiatt stuck his head into the recess and peered through the crack in the board.
“There’s something in there that’s not supposed to be. I can see rows of little red and green lights that keep going on and off. They’re nothing that I put there. I have no idea what they’re for.”
“I’ve got a sinking feeling about this,” said Eloise.
“Same here,” said Grey. “We’d better find out what we’re dealing with.”
Getting the board out turned out to be easier than expected. A screwdriver inserted into the crack lifted one half enough to get fingers under it. Tugging and swearing removed it. With the board out of the way, Grey peered into the cavity.
“Well, well, well. What do we have here?”
He lifted out a black metal box the size of a shoebox. On the top was a bank of red and green LEDs flickering on and off, above a small display panel and four buttons.
“All I can say,” said Lydiatt, “is that I have no idea what that is or how it got there.”

Beneath the dress she’d removed, a stitched-together rabbit sat dejected on the rest of the clothes. Its long ears and paws were threaded into shape with silver strands, feeling the raised texture as her fingers brushed against the fabric. Uneven shirt buttons, one white and one red, formed the two eyes. Star patterns drew along the back, sewn constellations with names that she had never learned.
Erin had insisted that Alexandra brought it along. So distraught had she been about the idea of Alexandra going away again that she had practically forced her to carry her stuffed rabbit. It came with the promise to look after it until the two met again.
Alexandra sighed, hugging the doll to her chest.

The guards looked shocked at the suggestion, but followed orders, taking up position outside the door. Sana walked in first and gestured for Bert to enter. As soon as he did, she closed the door and joined her father. He sat in a less ornate chair at an oak table and pointed at one opposite for Bert to sit.
Sana reached behind her and popped some button or undid some strap and her dress suddenly became larger, a corset loosening. "Thank Kaelen himself, that thing was digging into my ribs something fierce," she said. She stretched her sides and back as she said it, smiling at Bert. "You'll have to tie me up before we leave, Bert. Just the corset, mind you." She grinned, letting him know she was just playing around.
The king rolled his eyes. "The things we do for propriety, my love." He slid a mug of something across the table to Bert and drank from his own. "A round of Royals, lad?" He took out a game board and pieces from a drawer and set it up.
Bert had learned the basics of this game as a child and had spent days practicing when Yellow had taken an arrow and needed time to recover. He was pretty sure he could beat anyone at it. "Uh, sure, your majesty."
"It's Kaemon, kid. Be happy you're playing me. Filia would wipe the floor with you." The king was slapped lightly on his aging head by Sana. "Sorry, Sana would wipe the floor with you. Happy?"
Sana nodded and flopped down onto a nearby chair, kicking her shoes off. One knocked a pitcher of water from a table, but the king just smiled.

She reached Franco’s teeth quickly enough. After some scratching she found a husk of a hand as well. That would give the finder more ground for identifying the remains as human, providing the acid rain didn’t erode those bits to dust before the builders started. She also caught a thread of the translucent silver veil between the planes of existence. A little digging in the Veil’s way brought her to a gap where she could slide through.
He resumed his doctor’s body, this time wearing a white button-down shirt and black pants. His feet hit the wooden floor of a modest kitchen lit by kerosene. A plain wooden table sat across from a now-antique stove without a fire.
A muscular man with receding gray hair and three days’ growth of beard walked through the doorless doorframe in the corner. His rolled-up sleeves displayed a simplistically coloured tattoo of a mermaid holding out an oyster shell and pearl on his right arm. He had a lit cigarette in his mouth.
The sight of an intruder in his abode halted him at the door. With a groan he took a drag of his cigarette. At length he removed it and breathed out the name, “Aisling Oweynagat,” with the smoke.
“Ya recognize me, do ya?”
Franco snuffed out the cigarette on the brick wall. “I learned a couple things from death, like how to see past my eyes.”
“Isn’t that always the way of it.”
Franco walked across to the cabinet. “You speak from experience?”
“Not to speak of.”

“If they cannot contain, let them marry.” But I cannot marry, I thought. I will not live long enough.
I could not offer to marry Noriko, even though I wanted to. I would enter into that marriage knowing that presently, I would make her a widow.
The fourth button.
I felt heat rising from my own body. My breath was becoming fast, puffing out the fabric of the handkerchief. I could see another garment underneath her blouse now. I could feel my self-control weakening. I wanted her more than I’d ever wanted anything.
The fifth button.
Noriko is over forty and thinks she is too old to marry. Because of my condition, I cannot marry.
The last button was released and she let the blouse fall from her shoulders. The corset that bound her had many buttons. “Please help,” she said, meaning the buttons.
My hands moved to her body and helped undo buttons. There were so many. I wanted them to all be open right away. If we gave ourselves to each other, I thought, there would never be a wife who would feel that I gave away what belonged to her. And if Noriko never married, there would never be a husband who would think she had given away her virtue.
A realization dawned on me. We were the only husband and wife either of us would ever have.

Richtor was fucking around with a living mortal and almost got caught.

I walked through the wall and saw him lock the door to the security room. Then he got on the computer. I looked around trying to figure out what to do. Maybe I could break the computer. But that wouldn’t delete the camera footage. Maybe instead I could let him pull it up then push him aside and delete it myself.
“What!” He suddenly shouted as I was thinking. “It’s all gone! All of today’s footage is missing!” He was hysterical, he kept hitting the reload button in the corner of the computer screen which displayed a list of dates that ended yesterday.
“You did this! Didn’t you Richtor?” He screamed “You Bastard! You Demon Bastard! I hope I go to Hell just so I can show you what I did to Jason!” Barnes after continually beating against the door finally broke the lock and pushed Edmund down against the computer desk.
“No!” Edmund yelled struggling “it wasn’t my fault! It was the demon! It was Richtor!” He was cuffed by Barnes and dragged away. I let them leave and I leaned against the desk.
