dan @danabra.mov · 13/11/2024in early 2000s microsoft ceo said open source was “cancer”. now open source is common sense i wonder how long it’ll take for open social to become common sense 341881204
Steve Castle @castle.fyi · 13/11/2024I don't want to be overly cynical, but I think large corporations only came around on OSS because they learned to exploit the value. I don't know that you would want that to happen here. 000
nasso.dev @nasso.dev · 13/11/2024dan, don't skip the steps. we need a ceo to call it cancer first (i think i know who might) 030
Alex Lindquist @alxfed.bsky.social · 14/11/2024The CEO will change. I don't think the present one will last long, he is making too many visible mistakes. 100
alexkatsanos.bsky.social @alexkatsanos.bsky.social · 14/11/2024But open source now risks AI being out of control. Back in the day we were like “why should we have to pay for these expensive Unix licenses?” Open source was a pipeline of innovation…i guess it still is? 010
imabmf.bsky.social @imabmf.bsky.social · 13/11/2024Corporations will always want the comfort of a support contract. 020
Marco Buono @coreh.bsky.social · 15/11/2024To be fair, Ballmer was referring to a specific flavor of open source (GPL/copyleft/Free Software) that while extremely successful, is far from common sense in business/corporate, even today. Many companies that are big on Open Source have policies to not touch GPL-licensed code with a ten foot pole 000
Mary Grace @emgeekay.bsky.social · 14/11/2024So hard to believe people really did think that way☹️ 000
Michel Bestaat @michelbestaat.thereforeiam.eu · 14/11/2024Damn those developersmedia.tenor.coma man stands in front of a sign that says microsoft works developer (via Tenor) Posted from Skywalker @skywalker.thereforeiam.euThis GIF has been posted from Skywalker for Android. Jay Gilmore 🇨🇦 @jaygilmore.ca · 13/11/2024It’s so strange. By around 2010, Microsoft was sponsoring open source. They brought our MODX chief architect into work with MS as a project to help it run on Windows servers. 150
StrictlyChristo 🇺🇦🌻 @strictlychristo.bsky.social · 13/11/2024All I know is they made Twitter into some kind of algorithm monster that sucks out your soul. This place is a breath of fresh air. This is how it should be, IMHO. BS is doing something right! 060
nwrana.bsky.social @nwrana.bsky.social · 13/11/2024bsky.app/profile/nwra...@nwrana.bsky.social@nwrana.bsky.socialBluesky is literally open sourcing social networks, this really excites me for the future. 010
eatyourglory @eatyourglory.xyz · 13/11/2024depends on how much big corporations will fight against open social 000
Dott Winial @dottwinial.bsky.social · 14/11/2024Saying that as 2000s Microsoft sounds really scummy…. 000
Jay @jay-h.bsky.social · 14/11/2024I'm pretty sure MS still considers open source to be cancerous to their own IP. What they did was effectively co-opt open source so they could monetize the ecosystem with multiple SaaS products, built on the backs of every single public github repo in existence. 010
Fight the Lies @fightlies.bsky.social · 13/11/2024Was cancer to their business. Still is a nightmare of security for unpopular packages not maintained. 010
Charles Burns @charlesburns.bsky.social · 16/11/2024No Microsoft CEO ever said that open source is a cancer. Do you mean Steve Ballmer's quote about Linux, specifically? 100
Kalle @kalleott.de · 13/11/2024It’s time for other cancers to follow suit and finally become useful. 010
David Tanzer @dtanzer.bsky.social · 13/11/2024Open source licenses are common sense now, because corporations have found ways to exploit them. But they are still mostly fighting the open source philosophy/spirit that Microsoft was fighting back then, and that is weaker now than back then. Let's hope this does not happen to open social. 240
Neurodivergent BC @neurodivergentbc.bsky.social · 13/11/2024Oh Steve Balmer…you never had the right priorities for Microsoft. 000
dan @danabra.mov · 13/11/2024what do i mean by “open social” - either open source or enough is open source that a motivated team can reconstruct in a few months - data isnt tied to apps. it’s tied to you and can be (re)interpreted by new and old apps - big players can’t hurt the ecosystem without destroying own value 51368
Dharhix - I'm Trying! @dharhix.com · 13/11/2024To be honest, open source was always common sense. MS has become a growing cancer. Before that it was just a benign tumor. It's metastasing... 020
Sámal Rasmussen @samalrasmussen.bsky.social · 13/11/2024This feels like one of those things that will seem obvious in hind sight. "Ewwww how did people ever live like that?" 010
James Kasper @cbwp.bsky.social · 14/11/2024is the data stored in ways that it's generic and public and threaded? it wouldn't need certain securities that are required for dms if it's only the public data. 000
Hika/Tām | HK★TMK (Prof. Development Arc + Quiet ComicDev) @hikatamika.com · 13/11/2024I'm hoping BSky normalizes open social because as an artist I don't wanna have to go through another migration where I lose all my connections and have to reupload all my old art one-by-one. 😭 040
bairun ツ @bairun.xyz · 13/11/2024It’s common sense for consumers but not for businesses. In Web 2.0 companies their data is most of their moat, so putting it on an open data protocol doesn’t make sense as a business. Remains to be seen if there’s ways to monetize open data as effectively as a business comparatively. 110
Panta @pantas.net · 13/11/2024Feels like open source was "cancer", then open source became common sense, and now it's bouncing back a bit towards the middle, with a bunch of formerly open projects closing down due to the lack of funding. 000
