Should (celibate) gay men be ordained priests? - Outreach

James Martin, S.J., reflects on a recent paper from the McGrath Institute for Church Life on seminary formation and priestly ordination, asking whether celibate gay men should be ordained.

I've never understood why the gender of the people you aren't sleeping with would matter!

They already are (not to mention making the clergy shortage worse). How about this instead - love one another as Christ loved us. Love does no harm to another. If a person is called to the priesthood by Christ - gay, straight, male, female - don't stand in the way of the Holy Spirit.

And what about women? What about good, honorable, devoted, celibate WOMEN?

Yes. Once when working with gay people in OCIA, I told them the Church doesn't ask them any more than asked of others. The truth is the Church doesn't, but it does place them in a difficult situation that is brushed under the rug since there is no way to regularize their relationship in the Church.

This is an oxymoron. Gay men are not celebate.

Have never heard the term "deep seated heterosexual tendencies" applied to straight folk. In all the jobs I've had I was most comfortable, and as a result productive, when colleagues were aware of my sexuality. I think this would apply to priests too. It's all the mystery that turns people off.

Openly, yes. There have been countless gay ordained priests over the centuries.
