The Beatitudes are a template for what Jesus expects us to do now, which is to live out the reign of God, to participate in its building up.

"Care for the poor" means more significantly, acting for social justice, which means in practice actually fighting for social justice in the context of existing political structures. The Catholic Church has done an abysmal job of that, in fact courting reactionary movements that trample on the poor.

Maybe if this message had been loudly broadcast by leaders of legitimate Christian denominations, the snake-oil-selling "pastors" of fake Christian cults could have been unmasked and stopped in their tracks decades ago. This doctrine is simply no longer believed by their vast number of cult members.

There is a curious storm that has been brewing: the so called ‘end times’ hysteria in which two sides will be divided. I’ve been fascinated by this thinking as the Pro Life crowd views themselves among the righteous while crushing the poor / immigrants.
