Dr Zoë Ayres @zjayres.bsky.social · 15/12/2024Still a hill I will die on: unpaid internships are classist, and whilst you might *think* you are "helping students gain experience" all you are doing is widening the gap between those that can afford to and those that cannot. 1225953
Katharine Schopflin @schopflin.bsky.social · 16/12/2024Not just unpaid - anything that relies on the individual to have a supportive family within commuting distance of the job. 020
Mike Gallagher @geneticsmike7.bsky.social · 15/12/2024Do you think it’s a net good or net bad to have unpaid internships exist at all? 000
docspurge91.bsky.social @docspurge91.bsky.social · 16/12/2024Agreed! I firmly believe agencies can find a way to provide some sort of stipend/payment for interns. 000
Dani @dani-kml.bsky.social · 16/12/2024I agree. The amount of hours of unpaid work some students in Australia are expected to do to graduate is appalling. 000
KateAL @katieal.bsky.social · 16/12/2024They’re also illegal in the UK. We fought hard for that years ago because of the reasons you outline. There was even a Human Rights Watch report about it (by the interns!!!) . 000
Dan Jagger @auditorynerves.bsky.social · 18/12/2024All the more reason to support organisations like In2STEM & In2Research to widen opportunities for all in science labs 👍🏼 in2scienceuk.org/our-programm...in2scienceuk.orgIn2STEM - In2scienceUKIn2STEM (Formerly In2science Summer Programme) is a fantastic opportunity for 16-19-year-olds (Year 12 or S5/S6) passionate about STEM. 000
Patrick Rizzo @prizscisurf.bsky.social · 15/12/2024As a parent of two grads (BA and MFA, respectively), I'm on that hill with you. It needs to be outlawed. It's exploitative and it's unfair. 030
Rebecca Landon @rebeccajlandon.bsky.social · 19/12/2024THIS!!! I used to work in forensic psychology, and it was a field that thrives on unpaid internships. I got in just before (partly thanks to doing an undergrad with placements), but it made me furious. 000
Kaavya @kaavyanag.bsky.social · 15/12/2024Fully agree. Unpaid internships are the biggest scam across corporate and non profit sectors. 040
Dr Alan Montgomery @classicalalan.bsky.social · 15/12/2024I wholeheartedly agree. I used to work for a major auction in house in central London. Back then they had LOADS of unpaid interns. It was not about 'helping students', it was about getting free labour. It was amazing how many of these interns lived in very smart (ie. expensive) bits of the city... 140
