1. Pointing out that the Iranian regime's actions are horrific does not in any way subtract from the horror of the Israeli government's genocide in Gaza, or from other atrocities. There are, unfortunately, plenty here who seem to believe we should be partisan in our denunciations. They are wrong. 🧵

As someone who is on the left, it's enraging that so many cowardly and hypocritical Western leftists will agree with Khamenei and attack Nazanin for being a US/Israel stooge. Iranian and Palestinian people both have agency and deserve freedom. Trading one off against the other is immoral and wrong.

I don't know many opposed to Israel's genocide who give Iran's regime a free pass. But sometimes it's a privilege to be able to take principled stances. To Palestinians, Iran in its current form may be seen as a lifeline against a hostile/non-caring West. Albeit with misgivings, I'd understand that

Greta Thunberg and her gang has been completely silent about the Iranian killing of protesters. I don't see any flotilla of peace sailing too Iran . So I would conclude that these people are operating on a pro Iranian regime agenda . Including their critism of Israeli government.

Reminds me of some of the Labour supporters who repeatedly say they will never forgive the Lib Dems for supporting austerity, and yet they seem perfectly capable of forgiving Labour for the Iraq War which killed 500,000. It's as if some lives matter more than others.

2. For years I've battled people who seek to minimise, dismiss or deny great crimes committed by enemies of the West, such as Assad in Syria, Russia and Iran. They seem to believe we should call out only atrocities by NATO countries and allies. But a crime's a crime, regardless of who commits it.

Unfortunately, we are not short of horrific regimes in the world at the moment, & yes Iran is one of them. But maybe, when a horrific regime is the target of something significantly more horrific, it is possible to sympathise with them at least a bit. We allied with Stalin in WW2 stop a bigger evil

Totally agree, but forgive me if I concentrate my efforts on stopping the UK from aiding genocide, at the expense of condemnation of a country that is already condemned by all of the the UK establishment, & is threatened by what will probably be another catastrophic attempt at regime change
