Andy Masley still going on about this one stat in the year of our Lord 2026 when inference costs have overtaken training costs and the biggest data centre used for inference is running gas turbines in a way that is unprecedented in human history and violates EPA standards is absolutely wild.

Well put. Honestly, the buck stops there for me on the pro-datacenter interests and narratives broadly. If how Colossus was conducted cannot be challenged and rectified - and it isn’t - then the whole damned system must be presumed guilty and operating in bad faith.

Who the fuck other than Andy Masley still cares that Strubell et al. made some incorrect assumptions in 2019 about how a 110 million parameter BERT model was trained? Our current statistics on LLM energy use are not simply that statistic scaled up!
