'just go indie!' 'what's stopping you from making your own projects?' 'start your own studio!' 'there's never been a better time to be indie!' 'this is the perfect opportunity for creators!'

I'm sure you make a good argument, but that gif you used needs a goddamn seizure warning.

i remember listening to my dad's colleagues who started up an indie animation Thing (later a studio) in toronto, and the only way they managed it was by having one rich friend and selling A LOT of drugs, and sketchy favours. people have no idea what they're talking bout when they say "just go indie"

if people start actually paying indie creators to make stuff, go indie would be a more appealing answer (i am part of the problem admittedly, i just don't have the money to buy the cool indie stuff :( )

and like as is, being so broke very stressed, cant afford food trying to do art ...I HAVE NO ENERGY LMAO more indie projects could be made if artists could just have a long good recovery from this bitch of an earth 🥴

Indie has its perks, but for every successful indie that is successful in video games, animation, music, etc., there's like 20 of them that are just struggling to get by.

Having flashbacks to this artist on Twitter who couldn’t find work and couldn’t keep a retail job due to disability issues. They made a vent comic about it and the responses were either telling her to get a “real” job or start a YouTube channel.

This is why I’d rather work for a studio if I ever got to do animation work, personally. The flaws indie has scares me a lot more. Animation is already crazy work in an even crazier industry.

Deswarner @deswarner.bsky.social · 27/02/2026

too real. you don't know how I wish I had "voice-cast" money, much less "animated series" money. sometimes comics will have to do, man!

If we were seriously all supposed to make our own stuff this whole time, then animation is not an industry ....it's not a job....it's not a career, it's an EXPENSIVE TIME CONSUMING HOBBY! I don't even know anymore 😞

My favorite type of posts here are the ones that go "well have you tried X, Y & Z ???" and I'm like YES they did consider it you didn't say anything new or groundbreaking you can't get around the fact that it takes money to do any form of large production.

You don’t have to start a studio or anything but it’s always good to smart small with something.

I love indie. But it's riddled with issues as much as large established companies are— little to no pay, expected unpaid overtime, work for 'exposure', poor management/communication, no benefits/protections, toxicity, and more Indie is just not THE viable alternative that folks make it out to be
