My interpretation of Todd Howard's quote here is that they're probably ditching the base-building stuff we saw in Fallout 4 & Starfield. Which, selfishly, I'd be in favor of. I don’t know how you got that out of it. The question was in regards to Starfields style of exploration differing greatly. So between that and 76, classic Bethesda fans didn’t have that same experience. Nothing to do with bases.

The detours were Fallout 76 and Starfield, not Fallout 4. He was talking about getting back to their classic style of single player game of exploring a single large world. It wasn't about base building. That's part of the engine, I very much doubt that will be going away.

It seems like each new Bethesda switches a couple of its major gameplay systems in favor of something they have not used in a while, like Starfield's procedurally generated terrain that was once a feature of Daggerfall. If for no other reason, removing base building would make sense for TES VI.

All I need is a place to dump my crap as I murder hobo my way across the lands. Though I will admit Hearthfire provided a nice distraction to both grind blacksmithing and have a nice permanent residence in Falkreath.

I found the base building to be a decent distraction from the main game but what I really need from them is to not need a distraction from their main game.
