AI makes children better at doing their homework but 20% stupider so it's impossible to say whether it's good or not

Using 30 months of panel data on 26,811 Chinese students in grades 7-12, we study how generative AI affects homework productivity and learning. The data combine monthly closed-book exams, high-school and college entrance exams, and homework scores and completion time across nine subjects. We exploit staggered AI adoption in a difference-in-differences design. AI adoption raises homework scores by 18% and reduces completion time by 30%, but lowers monthly exam scores by 20% within six months. High-stakes entrance-exam scores fall by 18 and 24%, with the full penalty emerging only after about two years. The losses are largest in social science subjects, followed by STEM and languages, and are especially large for junior students, high-achieving students, and boys. The learning losses are concentrated among roughly 80% of AI users whose behavior is consistent with homework outsourcing, as indicated by exceptionally short homework completion time coupled with high homework scores. AI users who maintain similar homework completion time as non-AI users experience small learning losses.

Bike traffic on this one street in Paris went from 30k to 80k before Covid, then 120k during Covid, now 162k. 5x or 6x in 10 years. If you build it they will come.

wandrer is such a great hobby. you'll do something that would make you the biggest freak out of everybody you know, and then you'll check the leaderboard and realize that you're only like the 15th biggest freak in your local area

Many of you could be where we are—on the street—but for some simple and not uncommon twist of fate. This is part of your rejection, this fear that it could be you. You deny that reality because it is too horrific to contemplate, therefore you must deny us. And the moneyed reject us because they know they create us, that we are a consequence of their impulse to accumulate more than they need, rooted in a fear of life and the death that comes with it. Nothing good comes of fear, only destruction, and America has become a society of fear, much of that fear cultivated to divide and control.

there have been about 4 million motor vehicle fatalities in the United States since then (about 3x more than all United States military deaths in all wars in the nation's history combined)
