The Boots home computer dept. buying team knew from both their sales and their returns data, that Cheetah joysticks were not only their best-selling joysticks, but also much more reliable than other joysticks in their range👍 That was a v.nice deal to win for a (then) young Sales Manager at Cheetah 😎

A UK best-seller Cheetah 125+ joystick box, showcasing the additional +2 selector connector added onto the end of the cable.
This added ensured compatibility with most home computers including the ZX Spectrum +2 despite its non-standard joystick socket pin-allocations.
They had been deliberately changed away from the long-established Atari standard, by Amstrad, in a failed attempt to corner joystick sales for themselves

One of my favourite game covers of the 80s. Fantastic artwork from the brilliant Oliver Frey.

ZX History - October 1986: Boots turns their nose up at Amstrad’s suggestion that they bundle the new Spectrum +2 with Amstrad’s chosen games and joystick because, well, they were crap. Boots switches them out for better alternatives. (1/2)
