Welcome to October....1986. Super Cycle from Epyx was the closest C64 gamers got to Sega's Hang-On. Released 40 years ago this month, it's a cracking racer with the usual Epyx polish.

Top 30 #C64 Guilty Pleasures No 2 Fist: II The Legend Continues WOTEF blew me away in summer 85, so I was desperate for the sequel. When it finally arrived, ZZAP! roasted it (39%), & yes, it’s buggy & glitchy, but the music, atmosphere & martial-arts quest still pulled me in. A missed C64 classic.

My Top 30 #C64 Guilty Pleasures - No. 3 Out Run (EU) I adored the arcade game & eagerly awaited the C64 conversion. I knew it wouldn’t be in the same league as the original, yet despite the ropey graphics & missing forked roads, it wasn’t awful. Fast, nice tunes, addictive & exciting for a while.

My Top 30 #C64 Guilty Pleasures No. 4 Blackwyche ZZAP! panned this (53%) and I can see why: it has its faults and a few bugs. But I loved it anyway. Like Staff of Karnath & Entombed, it’s packed with atmosphere and superb background graphics, and its intriguing pirate-ghost mystery kept me hooked.

My Top 30 #C64 Guilty Pleasures - No. 5 Space Harrier It was always going to be a tall order converting Sega’s state-of-the-art, hydraulic-powered arcade blaster to the C64. And yes, it’s jerky & nowhere near as spectacular. But somehow, the speed, chaos & sheer ambition still made it fun to play.

My Top 30 #C64 Guilty Pleasures - No. 6 1942 Scoring a middling 58% in ZZAP!, Elite’s C64 conversion of 1942 didn’t exactly promise greatness. Like Bomb Jack, the screen's a bit squashed; however, the controls are good, and it's fast, addictive, action-packed, and still good for a quick blast.

My Top 30 #C64 Guilty Pleasures - No. 7 Wonder Boy I loved Wonder Boy in the arcades, so I was horrified when I loaded this up and saw those ugly graphics. But once you hit fire, it plays better than it looks. The sprite’s awful and the music grates, but it’s colourful, addictive & plenty of fun.

My Top 30 #C64 Guilty Pleasures - No. 8 Bomb Jack Yes, this could’ve been a lot more like the arcade original, and yes, the playing area is horribly squashed. But once you get over that, it’s colourful, fast, addictive and fun to play. A wonky conversion, but one I have a bit of a soft spot for.

Top 30 #C64 Guilty Pleasures No. 9 Wizardry This was one of those games I wanted to be better than it was. It looked great in previews, but when it finally arrived it never quite lived up to the promise. The graphics & music kept me playing, even if beneath the shiny surface it was all a bit dull.

My Top 30 #C64 Guilty Pleasures - No. 10 Hercules Scoring 2/5 in Home Computing Weekly and 4/10 in Commodore User, and with awful graphics and sound, Hercules looks like a total 💩. But don’t be fooled! Its devious level design and fast pace make for action-packed platforming at its very best.

My Top 30 #C64 Guilty Pleasures No. 11 Dragon’s Lair Okay, okay, I know. Strip away the arcade original’s stunning cartoon visuals and Dragon’s Lair is basically a reaction test. Yet the C64 version still has atmosphere, decent graphics and enough trial-and-error tension to make it oddly playable.

C64Reloaded @c64reloaded.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
My Top 30 #C64 Guilty Pleasures - No. 12 Sabre Wulf Scoring just 40% in ZZAP!, you’d be forgiven for dismissing Sabre Wulf as a poor game. The C64 version is a glitchy, straight Speccy port, but the original’s brilliant gameplay survives intact, making it a hugely absorbing arcade adventure.

C64Reloaded @c64reloaded.bsky.social · 09/09/2026
My Top 30 #C64 Guilty Pleasures - No. 13 Super Bowl XX Ocean’s 1985 American football game is hugely flawed (it’s way too easy to beat) and has poor sound and minuscule, monochrome graphics, but it was great fun as a two-player experience and, as a massive Gridiron fan BITD, I played it to death.

My Top 30 #C64 Guilty Pleasures - No 14 Gilligan’s Gold One day my dad came home with a C90 packed with games he’d got from “a bloke at work”. One of them was this Bagman clone. Hardly original, but hauling gold through the mine, dodging guards and dropping bags on their heads made it lots of fun.

My Top 30 #C64 Guilty Pleasures - No. 15 Kong Strikes Back! This clone of Mr Do’s Wild Ride was one of the first games I had for the C64. It was hardly groundbreaking but the graphics are colourful, the sound is jolly and the gameplay is instantly appealing and entertaining.

My Top 30 #C64 Guilty Pleasures - No. 16 Mermaid Madness I’ve always loved a good arcade adventure, and while Mermaid Madness may not be up there with the best, it’s a fun little game with an original scenario, good graphics, neat puzzles, plenty of humour and a fair bit of charm.

C64Reloaded @c64reloaded.bsky.social · 03/09/2026
My Top 30 #C64 Guilty Pleasures - No. 17 Frank Bruno’s Boxing A second-rate Punch-Out! clone and a pretty ropey one: glitchy, awkward to control and full of dubious stereotypes. Yet it’s strangely addictive at first, fun for a while & probably the closest the C64 got to Nintendo's boxing classic.

C64Reloaded @c64reloaded.bsky.social · 02/09/2026
My Top 30 #C64 Guilty Pleasures - No. 18 Paperboy Paperboy was an arcade fave of mine BITD, so I was disappointed when Elite delivered 😉 this sub-par conversion. Yet, despite the garish graphics, crap collision detection and small play area, I actually played it quite a lot.

Welcome to September...1986! 40 years ago (I know!) Dan Dare landed on the C64. A brilliant arcade adventure with a cool comic book vibe, it scored a 9/10 C&VG Hit! and a 94% ZZAP!64 Sizzler.

My Top 30 #C64 Guilty Pleasures - No. 19 Floyd the Droid This obscure title casts you as a droid cleaning up London's sewers, which sounds incredibly dull. Somehow, though, it’s rather fun in a repetitive way. Not action-packed, but original, oddly charming and lifted by great graphics and sound.

My Top 30 #C64 Guilty Pleasures No. 20 Chiller Yes, the graphics are horrific & the sound's a nightmare, but as it was one of the first C64 games I played, I've a soft spot for this Thriller-inspired platformer. A simple collect-em-up with enough charm & challenge to keep you playing for a while.

C64Reloaded @c64reloaded.bsky.social · 20/08/2026
My Top 30 #C64 Guilty Pleasures No. 21 Metro-Cross This rather obscure arcade conversion was met mainly with apathy at the time, largely due to its lack of lasting appeal. While it does pall after a while, its colourful graphics and easy-to-pick-up-and-play gameplay make it instantly entertaining.

My Top 30 #C64 Guilty Pleasures - No. 22 Rock n’ Wrestle I couldn’t wait for this follow-up to Fist to smack down onto the C64 canvas. Sadly, it wasn’t in the same league as its legendary predecessor, but its daft humour and enjoyable gameplay still made it appealing.

My Top 30 #C64 Guilty Pleasures No. 23 Camelot Warriors This is one of those games I really wanted to be good, and while it’s not great, it’s not terrible. With colourful graphics, decent atmosphere and just enough charm to keep you playing, it’s a flawed but strangely likeable arcade adventure.

My Top 30 #C64 Guilty Pleasures - No. 24 Kettle In Tony Crowther’s crazy Kettle, the player takes control of a kettle that flies, shoots and searches for tin openers to escape from underground caverns. Very silly but a laugh for a while and IMO better than ZZAP’s lowly 34% score suggests.

C64Reloaded @c64reloaded.bsky.social · 29/07/2026
My Top 30 #C64 Guilty Pleasures - No. 25 Gyroscope Apart from Spindizzy, the C64 was bereft of good Marble Madness games, and while Gyroscope could do with a bit more variety and a few more baddies, it’s easy to pick up and play, has nice isometric graphics and is good fun for a while.

C64Reloaded @c64reloaded.bsky.social · 28/07/2026
My Top 30 #C64 Guilty Pleasures No. 26 Red Max This Mad Max-inspired release earned a paltry 36% in ZZAP! who described it as ‘boring and unplayable’. Yes, it is a bit repetitive, but it was only £2, and the graphics are nice, the music is excellent, and it kept me entertained for many hours BITD.

C64Reloaded @c64reloaded.bsky.social · 27/07/2026
My Top 30 #C64 Guilty Pleasures - No. 27 Street Surfer ZZAP gave Street Surfer just 29% and dismissed it as 'one of Mastertronic’s weakest releases', yet I quite liked it. Colourful, instantly playable and powered by a neat David Whittaker tune, it’s a standard budget racer with a recycling twist.

My #C64 Guilty Pleasures No. 28 Tunnel, Tunnel Vision, T-Tunnel Vision! Not nearly as entertaining as the Chuckle Brothers, but Tunnel Vision is a reasonable head-to-head-split-screen-future-racer that’s fun with 2 players. With speech, a track editor and a £1.99 price tag, it was great value too.

My Top 30 #C64 Guilty Pleasures - No. 29 Milk Race Maybe it was a love of bike riding when I was a kid that got me into this. It’s nowhere near the C64’s best racing games, and it can be frustrating, but it has decent graphics and sound and when you get used to the controls, it’s pretty good fun.

My #C64 Guilty Pleasures No. 30 Bazooka Bill ZZAP described Bazooka Bill as 'incredibly repetitive & monotonous' awarding it just 30%, yet there was always something I quite liked about it. The graphics are colourful, the music's great, and I’ve always been a sucker for a bit of run & gun action.

New list incoming - My Top 30 C64 Guilty Pleasures They may be flawed, frustrating or downright ropey, but for one reason or another, I still loved 'em. These games are far from classics. Some were slated by ZZAP!, others are riddled with faults, yet somehow I still played them loads. Coming soon!
