It’s really a lot of fun, and does a thing analog horror excels at: piecing together disparate documents from seemingly unrelated stories. The underwater scenes are impressive and honestly kinda scary. If you want to watch it as a single movie, you can do that here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=JqIA...

8. The Mirror Without Image - Another analog horror series, in the vein of Mikansei No Torii or Kane Parsons’ Backrooms, piecing together archives documents. The Mirror Without Image has to do with science experiments gone wrong, time travel, and an undersea city. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cgzr...

This one is super melodramatic & all-in on the 1970s trend of Shirtless Middle Aged Men Having Sex, and stars Gena Rowlands as the wife. But it also features San Diego’s Hotel Del Coronado, one my favorite places in my old town

7. Circle of Fear, “The Concrete Captain”: back to my love of 70s TV horror! This little drama is the story of a man and a woman who get possessed by the ghosts of a captain who was harpooned and buried in concrete and his wife who waited for him. www.youtube.com/watch?v=I8qO...

6. “Ghost Test”: I don’t actually know the real name of this one, it’s in Japanese (the last word of the title, “テスト,” or “tesuto” is obviously “test”.) This is just a nice little Japanese short about the psychology of hauntings. IDK I just kinda like it. www.youtube.com/watch?v=hINd...

I hadn’t either until it showed up on YouTube. It’s a little slow but it’s got that good fate-and-doom thing going for it. Today’s YouTube is also folk horror, btw, though very self-consciously so.

An episode of Walt Disney presents about Mount Everest that had a story about a kid whose dad died searching for a new route up Everest, and now the kid was searching for a new route up Everest, and for some reason the image of a passage through the mountain still haunts me. I was like 5

3. Mikansei no Torii: a Polish-Japanese analog horror series about a cursed Japanese gate that has also turned up in an underground cave in Poland. Ep. 1 (linked here) is especially weird, structurally, & kind of a slow burn, so make sure to check out ep. 2 as well www.youtube.com/watch?v=6-yO...

Bluesky post from Will Oremus @willoremus.com • you can eschew anthropomorphizing language like "think" and "reason" and even
"intelligence" but anyone who uses these tools regularly cannot fail to see that what they do is something more than just parroting.

2. The Haunted House (Segundo De Chomon 1907): Keeping it light for day 2, this is a little horror comedy silent short film special fx extravaganza sort of in the vein of Mélies. The “new score” kind of misses the tone of the film, but it’s still pretty rad. www.youtube.com/watch?v=H6kF...

Either way, I just think silent films are neat, and one of the joys of YT is the ability to find little silent gems you might never have heard of otherwise.

010

Howard Dafuq @zwlocklin.bsky.social · 02/10/2026

You have to be a little careful with silent film on YT. “AI upscaling” is starting to be a thing, so you definitely want to check the video info before you watch. This one explicitly says the digital cleanup involved no AI, so fingers crossed.

It being October, I thought I’d start up my old “YouTube Horror” thread again. I’ve been stumbling across a *lot* of really bad found footage movies, but there have been some gems over the last year, whether short films, feature-length Japanese movies, or mini-documentaries.

This is all such good advice, but also brilliantly focused on the social/personal aspects we ignore too often. My number one advice to my poetry students is: Be nice to people. Make friends. Compliment other people’s work.

Comically, it’s the low class size that’s being used to deny us new tenures in creative writing: you only teach 60-80 students a semester! So the need to hire more faculty is the very excuse used to not hire more faculty. (Also bc they can just throw lecturers like me into the classes)

I was like, Why? Why would you want me to submit (even though we’re real-life friends)? And he was like Shut the fuck up, Zach. And the next thing I know, I’m watching every Tomie and Ju-On movie and taking copious notes and just writing writing writing

DARKER INK is a really special one to me. This is my first publication since the pandemic, and I’m really proud of the poems I have in it. I can honestly say this project reignited my poetry spark. When Eric Morago called me to tell me to submit, I had basically quit writing poetry.
