How long had you been submitting stories before you got your "big break"?

Poor airports. I hate those pesky humans too.

Why do airports need therapy?

...it is often easier to just assign a diagnosis than fully investigate an issue, and can simply be a tool to boost research funding. See also "pre-diabetic" for a (potentially) over-used diagnosis. Diagnosis without a treatment plan is just putting people in boxes and helps no one.

Unless the headline has changed since you posted, it very much *does* say what the report says. "4% of children aged six to 17 were now diagnosed with autism, well above the 1-2% that studies suggest is the true level." There are the usual caveats, but...

Never let too many of your family get close to you. The number of people that die "surrounded by their family" needs investigating.

Mainstream media's idea of journalism has declined to the point where all press releases are reported as factual. Who are we to doubt the word of tech bros who would otherwise be imprisoned for hacking, computer misuse and telecommunication security breaches?

over the past few weeks several AI evaluation/cybersecurity experts have explained how what's happening is a result of human incompetence rather than "AI going rogue". I'm begging the media to show a shred of journalistic integrity and stop parroting what altman or amodei say

My Little Oxford Dictionary Of Current English has never steered me wrong. Admittedly I've got the 1943 edition, but if it was good enough for WWII, it is good enough for me.

Original Trek had 80 episodes over 3 seasons. That gave them room for some fun episodes. When you're only doing 10 episodes per season, you've got to keep it tight, not destroy a 60-year-old institution.

Ah, thanks! My googling led me down a rabbit hole of references to journalling, and I didn't see how it related to novelists.

Ah, I'd seen an "explainer" that was wrong, I've now read Anthropic's site. So the only way you can tell that text has been GenAI'd is to pay(?) each AI provider to parse the text looking for its own patterns with its own keys? This doesn't appear to be a step forward in reducing reliance on GenAI!

Yes, it would need to be a sizeable chunk of text for the language side of the watermarking to work. It wouldn't identify the source, simply indicate that it was AI generated, and I suspect that word frequency analysis could quickly highlight which words or phrases are the markers.

Having worked in a university, I've seen embarrassing situations, and mistakes in employing the underqualified (or just frauds), be ignored until they boil over. The hope often appears to be that no one will notice. And someone always does, eventually. 2/2

Having heard some of the repugnant views of Cofnas, I can see why many people ignored him, but there seem to be enough holes in Arday's life story that this should never have reached the situation it did. I'm not saying that the ones who didn't act are the worst culprits, but they do share blame. 1/

The mob arrived because the people who should have taken action (the University, his colleagues, his friends) didn't do so when given the opportunity. It's a sad situation where there is plenty of blame to assigned to the people who stayed quiet, as well as the baying mob.

It looks like @bsky.app @support.bsky.team need to work on the "Trending" feed. The polls have only been open a couple of hours, and they are already stating that Farage has won.
Text from the Bluesky "Trending" section saying "Farage wins Clacton seat"

For the 1999 total eclipse in the UK, I was surrounded by professors and doctors of Astronomy, and clouds. As they dejectedly ended their countdown to totality, the clouds parted, gave us about a minute of viewing, and then normal service was resumed.

Did the actual human help though? I'm convinced that the scripts that some human customer service agents are forced to follow were written by the same chatbots that couldn't solve the problem in the first place.

As someone who seems to have constant trouble with customer service departments, repeating "Connect me to a human" works surprisingly often with chatbots. But the human you get is usually less helpful than the chatbot. Just searching for the right email address is usually easier, and saves you time.

As an anthology of fanfic, the Bible is somewhat inconsistent in tone. But then, so is the Quran. That makes both of them wonderful for cherry-picking lines that can back up whatever it is that you want to claim on any given day. And people wonder why religion is so divisive!

I don't know about Spanish, but a writer should be aware whether they are using an idiom or not in English. As mentioned in another post, in English we often find that an idiom isn't widely known in other English-speaking countries (or sometimes within the same country!)

Which does rather hark back to my question about how much effort you put into the translatability of novels. British humourist authors don't, and often suffer from it. But British humour, like the extra letter it contains, seems too much for the average American.

I'm currently on my 4th email with Sainsbury's where the customer service agent insists on apologising for an issue I didn't complain about, while ignoring genuine issues like staff lying, staff responding to an email address they have made up, staff not reading emails, and more lying. 3/3

I was thinking more of idioms that often don't even make sense in the original language, let alone when translated. But as @scalzi.com alludes to, maybe including idioms is a good way to spot AI "translators" which are actually just transcribers?
