Auf der rechten Plakatseite finden sich weitere Informationn zum Vortrag: Die Geschichte des kolonialen Indiens ist von verheerenden Hungersnöten geprägt, denen Schätzungen zufolge bis zu 80 Millionen Menschen zum Opfer fielen. Der Vortrag versucht anhand einer Fallstudie einen Beitrag zur Klärung ihrer Ursachen zu leisten. Anders als viele Arbeiten, die vor allem Verfügbarkeit und Verteilung von Nahrungsmitteln in den Blick nehmen, präsentiert er einen Analyserahmen, der die Wechselwirkungen zwischen natürlichen und sozialen Systemen in den Mittelpunkt rückt. Ein besonderer Fokus liegt auf der Rekonstruktion historischer Dürren als zentrale Auslöser von Ernährungskrisen; dafür werden Paläoklimadaten, frühe Instrumentalmessungen und qualitative Archivalien zusammengeführt.

Rolf Bauer ist Principal Investigator (PI) und Senior Postdoc am Institut für Soziale Ökologie an der BOKU University. Im FWF Projekt “Hazards, Vulnerability and Resilience in Colonial India” untersucht er Hungersnöte in Nordindien in der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts. Zuvor hatte er mehrere Gastprofessuren für moderne Südasienkunde, Globalgeschichte sowie Wirtschafts-  und Sozialgeschichte an der Universität Wien inne. Seine Monografie “The Peasant Production of Opium in 19th Century India” erschien 2019 bei Brill.
