From James Clear:
"The loser has more in common with the winner than with the person sitting on the sidelines.

The winner and the loser each had the courage to try. Both risked embarrassment. Both were willing to face uncertainty. Both were stubborn enough to continue.

Success is endurance in disguise. It belongs to the person who can absorb the losses without absorbing the identity of "loser." It's the courage to start — and to stick with it — that is the real separator. Results tend to find the person who stays in the game.

The sidelines are safe, but sterile. Nothing grows there."

I am celebrating the ice storm in Austin by making borscht. My coworker gave me a recipe. I've never had it before, so I don't know how it compares, but I think it's delicious. I don't know why it isn't more red? I wish I could have my Ukrainians over to eat some and tell me how I did.

Photo by Pierre Lavie. Yes this is me. And I threw my Leica. It landed on the bass plate with hardly a scratch. Another Photographer grabbed it along with my phone and I was able to track him later. I was held face down tear gas deployed right in front of me and pepper sprayed directly into the eye.

I keep thinking about this and sharing it with individuals I love. It’s a concept that should be taught in basic psychology, parenting or relationship class. It’s about how adults in some cultures criticize each other in a constructive and loving way. (Because we missed that in our culture.)

From James Clear's newsletter:
Author and journalist Min Jin Lee on what is important:

"I heard in a sermon once that the definition of self-control was to choose the important over the urgent.

Often, I've wished that I could've had quicker success, greater financial security, more respect, et cetera, as a writer. For nearly twelve years now since leaving the law, I have often felt ashamed for wanting to be a writer and doubtful of my talents.

What helped in these moments was to consider what was important, rather than the urgent feelings of embarrassment and helplessness. What was important is still important now: to learn to write better in order to better complete the vision one holds in one's head and to enjoy the writing, because the work has to be the best part."

From James Clear, always reminding us that you can't succeed if you don't start.
"Mental toughness is often framed as the perseverance that gets you across the finish line:

Find a way to make it happen
Push through the pain
Grind it out to the end
But most days, mental toughness isn't about crossing the finish line. It's about getting to the starting line:

Show up when no one is watching
Keep your eye on the ball
Do a little bit every day
Mental toughness is not skipping the days that are easy to skip."

Trusting takes courage. Hope takes engagement. Love obligates one to be responsible in the world. Cynicism and nihilism are lazy and cowardly.
"Cynicism is not a neutral position — and although it asks almost nothing of us, it is highly infectious and unbelievably destructive. In my view, it is the most common and easy of evils. I know this because much of my early life was spent holding the world and the people in it in contempt. It was a position both seductive and indulgent...

Unlike cynicism, hopefulness is hard-earned, makes demands upon us, and can often feel like the most indefensible and lonely place on Earth. Hopefulness is not a neutral position either. It is adversarial. It is the warrior emotion that can lay waste to cynicism. Each redemptive or loving act, as small as you like... keeps the devil down in the hole. It says the world and its inhabitants have value and are worth defending. It says the world is worth believing in. In time, we come to find that it is so." - Nick Cave
