It turns out they hadn’t called my mom in, my dad called her to say he was ok, which is how she found out, and she turned around to run back to the school to let me know he was ok. I finally learned what was happening, and was kind of mad that I didn’t get the day off.

I was immediately pulled out of class and into the hallway with the principal. No adult bothered to inform me that this was for my own good, so I thought that I’d somehow fucked up majorly. But no worries, I knew what to do when questioned by authority, plead the fifth and don’t talk to cops.

I had 3 impressions of what was going down, a large building was collapsing, it was in NYC, and Business Things happened in large buildings so my dad was probably there, uh oh! So I said that my dad was in NYC, hoping to get more information, but then every adult near by got REALLY SERIOUS.

My mom didn’t really watch the news in the morning, so we drove to school like normal and she dropped me off. I only learned what was happening through the gossip of the other kids who didn’t really know what was happening either.

One time during a procedure, a dentist treated me as what I can only describe as a frightened horse. I wasn't nervous going into the procedure, but if I had been, the frequent pats and half heard gentle shushing would not have helped matters.

The Squamish people of what is now Vancouver were illegally dispossessed of their land 100 years ago. They sued, got the land back, and used their sovereignty to ignore local zoning and build 6,000 new homes over the loud objections of nearby wealthy NIMBYs. Now other tribes are getting in the game.
