The project in which I spent most of my time adjusting fish icons in powerpoint, but a tiny bit of my time diving in southern California kelp forests! Feel free to ping for pdf. @meps-ir.bsky.social @vrgoxy.bsky.social www.int-res.com/abstracts/me...
Illustration showing representative community structure across four reef types: natural mainland, Palos Verdes artificial reef, Santa Monica Bay artificial reefs, and natural island reefs. Each panel has grey rocky substrate set against a blue background. Natural reef panels show a left-to-right gradient from shallow inner to deeper reef zones. Each community type displays distinctive assemblages of fish, algae, and invertebrates, positioned according to depth. Species composition varies: natural reefs include diverse macroalgae and invertebrates, while artificial reefs show fewer algal forms and higher fish biomass. Icons for key species appear throughout, with a legend in the bottom right corner. The figure conveys differences in habitat composition and depth-related structure, emphasizing how natural reefs are more structurally and taxonomically complex compared to artificial reefs. The use of separate panels provides a direct visual comparison across reef types and ecological gradients.

Many terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems have lost their uniqueness as competitive generalists (think grass, pigeons, etc.) replace endemic species. But that doesn't appear to be the case for all ocean fish. Huge thanks to a powerhouse co-author team for getting this across the finish line!

Vaccination schedules on the CDC website have already started changing under RFK Jr. So we published a guide to the evidence-based vaccine recommendations in place *before* all 17 members of the advisory panel were abruptly dismissed by the new admin. www.scientificamerican.com/article/see-... 🧪

This makes me sick. It’s giving me flashbacks to watching the original Lorax cartoon and having nightmares.

This is devastating—and a potentially massive step backward in the global fight against climate change. Keep the pressure on your representatives—this can't go unanswered.

NOAA has required us to discuss climate change impacts of our work in grant applications for years. This is *all habitat restoration grants*. The climate impacts of this are pretty clear. The infrastructure impacts of this will be far reaching too.

NOAA is on the chopping block, and that’s infuriating. The scientists at NOAA make us safer and stronger. They forecast weather, track wildfires, provide tsunami warning, respond to climate change, and more, and they are especially important for coastal communities.

New: The LA wildfires blew untold tons of toxic ash over the ocean. As the fires broke out, scientists were at the "right place at a horrible time" - on an expedition off the LA coast, giving them a rare chance to gather real-time data on marine impacts. Free link. www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

To update people on the NSF PRFB situation: despite the court challenge and rescinding the original memo, the NSF has continued to comply with the executive order. They have not communicated with us at all and our paychecks are still canceled indefinitely. I know people who cannot pay their rent.
