zkarj @zkarj.me · 18/05/2026So you're concerned that parts of countries have been left off a map. Well, sir, I give you a phenomenon that goes one step further…en.wikipedia.orgOmission of New Zealand from maps - Wikipedia 100
zkarj @zkarj.me · 15/05/2026My Mum is English, though has not lived there in 60+ years. When I was a kid, corned beef was on the Sunday lunch roster. She told us she'd not come across it until she arrived in New Zealand. The first time she cooked it she was very concerned that it remained pink and therefore surely not cooked! 000
zkarj @zkarj.me · 02/04/2026I should add that it was a daytime flight. I also bid (twice the amount) for our overnight NRT-AKL leg and did not get it. So they are obviously popular on night flights. 010
zkarj @zkarj.me · 02/04/2026I bid for (and got) an upgrade to it last year AKL-SIN. The only reason I did so was to guarantee no third person in the row. I did, however, see an adjacent row using it and can confidently say that at 6'2" it would be cramped for just me, let alone with my wife there also. 000
zkarj @zkarj.me · 29/03/2026Ugh. Is that a problem on the radios? I personally like DST, and I can manage the times in my head (my Dad was a transport pilot), but goddamn if I haven't had international meetings booked where people show up an hour early/late. 100

zkarj @zkarj.me · 28/03/2026Wellington Airport had a temporary terminal — opened in 1959. Its replacement opened in 1999. Best of all, the temporary terminal was a repurposed hangar. I remember looking straight up between the baffles where you could see the steelwork. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Welling...en.wikipedia.orgWellington Airport - Wikipedia 000
zkarj @zkarj.me · 14/04/2025You should check out the podcast series “13 Minutes to the Moon”. It is, bar none, the best media production of any kind that I have consumed in my life. 010
zkarj @zkarj.me · 22/03/2025If any airline advertises those new coffee carts, that’s a hard boycott from me. Airliners are noisy enough. Millions managed to give up smoking while flying. Everyone can give up coffee up there, too. 000
zkarj @zkarj.me · 18/03/2025I don’t know what you’re hearing in the US, but in my part of the world there are deep discounts on flights to the US because no-one wants to go. Maybe useful in about 4 years, though. 040
zkarj @zkarj.me · 14/02/2025Can you cover the “most tracked” feature on the podcast? The retirement flight of RNZAF C-130H(NZ) recently had over 11,000 at one point and I wondered what the record is. 000
zkarj @zkarj.me · 08/02/2025@flightradar24.com it would be interesting to hear on the podcast about the most followed flights. The recent retirement flight of the RNZAF C-130H(NZ) topped 11,000 at one point. The highest I have personally seen. 000
zkarj @zkarj.me · 20/01/2025Instance is just a term for server. Your email isn’t on the same server as mine but we can email each other. Same thing. But if you have an account already that’s the hardest part done. Just treat it like original Twitter. There are various “automatic” views, just stick to your home feed. 000
zkarj @zkarj.me · 19/01/2025Apart from choosing an instance (or creating your own if you’re keen and able) it’s just like early Twitter. I even use an app based on the one I used for Twitter so it’s very familiar. 100
zkarj @zkarj.me · 19/01/2025I’m just lurking for now, having found some of the aviation community I was following over *there*. I’m very active on Mastodon. Unimpressed by the BlueSky app. In fact downright annoyed by it. 100
zkarj @zkarj.me · 10/01/2025I’m only on BlueSky for some of the avgeeks I used to follow on Twitter, though it took most a year or so more than me to get here. My life is now on Mastodon, with photography on Glass (and Flickr since forever). 010
