Maybe this works and I just don't know shit about what is effective, very possible, but I had to open an investigation today because this gave me a crick in the neck and a rush of violent instinct. I had to go find them all to prove that these quotes are not crazy annoying in-context. (They're not!)

Fuck it bsky can have this too

Text: Essay questions you can expect on the exam:
1. What do you think it means that there's an entire scifi subgenre of trans women's art that uses tropes from mecha/military science fiction to talk about the transfeminine experience of being victimized, abused, dehumanized, and stripped of agency without any recourse or power that would act in your defense?
2. What does it say that in the wider culture from which these tropes were developed and adopted into these stories, the soldier that suffers while committing violent acts on behalf of the powerful is one of the most sympathetically portrayed forms of fictional trauma victim?
(Don't actually answer me probably, I'm not equipped to grade these and neither is the TA I don't have.)

The most pure fun-book pick of my youth that no one talks about is probably the Firebringer Trilogy. It's not Watership Down but in xenofiction, that's like saying the pretty good fantasy adventure you liked wasn't more Tolkien. The unicorn drama became my you-must-be-this-earnest-to-hook-me bar.

On the xenofiction side: Richard Adams is obvious but I also think of Clare Bell every time. Ratha captures fire, is exiled, becomes a teen mom and it goes BADLY, and then returns to irrevocably change cat society (via use of fire as a weapon) and worries she has made it worse. And that's book 1!

Ohh my godddd I gotta go finish Dog Country. I hit a slow section at a time where I got really busy and then I forgot about it. Very much a kindred spirit. Also Dogs of War by Adrian Tchaikovsky. (This is a thing people often do with cats and dogs as major characters can you tell?)

I really enjoyed the "what becomes of a person made to be a weapon when their weaponhood is outlawed." Forests of the Night was just fun, if a retro scifi mystery with a tiger detective (2nd generation free) sounds like a good time to you it probably is. (Been a while, might have some scuffs tho.)

Anyway upon consideration I think the stuff that kicks me down the stairs every time is exploration of "personhood" that is very much not shaped like John Q Everyday Human Doing Human Things. Watership Down. Murderbot Diaries. This thang I found on Kindle for $2 and read in a single afternoon.

"tropes i should like, written poorly," is so demoralizing when you had your hopes up and really does make you doubt your own tastes for a bit. my banner actually came from a conversation i had after escaping from one of those.
