yes, i changed my user picture on October first for Halloween, what of it.

the picture of Kate Dippold in her Babadook costume at an otherwise normal dress gathering. you know the one. yes, I know she created Widow's Bay. a good show, but one that i find more frustrating than a lot of people, which is always an uncomfortable experience for me. am i being too harsh? should i change my opinion? but it's _my_ opinion, it's how i feel watching the show. sometimes Principal Skinner is right: sometimes the children _are_ wrong.

just to go on the record: if i ever criticize a piece of work for its tropes (or cliches or tricks or whatever you call it), i'm not saying that tropes are inherently bad; just that is the job of the writer to transcend our innate familiarity with them in order to make them engaging again.

mixed feelings on Silent Hill: Townfall. some fantastic visuals and interesting puzzles, but the stealth/combat feels like it's just a hair on the wrong side of frustrating. just got to an area with a monster that instantly kills you, which isn't great.

Succession is a weird show to me because everyone got so caught up in trying to figure out what would happen next when the whole point of it was that the main characters were locked in stasis and could never change. (I'm not saying this was a failing, just... interesting.)

finished The Dorians, Nick Cutter's latest novel. it's great, possibly my favorite Cutter so far--well-paced, unpredictable within the scope of its concept, and satisfyingly gory. Cutter is really good at a kind of pulpy, gulp-down-in-an-afternoon horror that's surprisingly hard to pull off.

Man, I hope Silent Hill: Townfall is good. Silent Hill f was super-polished and had some good moments, but it never really came together for me. (And the multiple playthrough requirement was a bad idea.)

Remember the Penguin Classics edition of Lolita that stripped out the intro by ‘John Ray, Jr.’ (which is part of the novel)? Louise Willder, in her new book The Book Was Better, discloses that the same edition of Pale Fire was almost published without Charles Kinbote’s intro and notes…

Metafiction can wrongfoot publishers too. There was once a move at Penguin to free the classics from scholarly introduc-tions, so somebody decided it would be a good idea to reissue Nabokov's Pale Fire without its foreword or footnotes.* The only problem was that they were part of the novel's metafictional joke: the creation of an invented writer called Charles Kinbote, who we soon realise is a lunatic, believing himself to be king of a country called Zembla. The mistake was caught before the book went to press - but not the misspelling Nabkov' on the spine. Ouch.

i've been pretty open on here about struggling with depression, so i wanted to give an update--we've upped my meds (generic version of Lexapro) to 25 mg a day, and it has been a noticeable improvement. i can think more clearly now, and I'm not constantly trying to struggle through my feelings.

Enjoying the new Onimusha. It’s not perfect, but the combat system (which is about as complex as I’m comfortable with) is a blast, and everything is extremely polished and well put together. It also helps that the protagonist is clearly a riff on Toshiro Mifune.
