No more Bunsen burners here. And honestly in all my chemistry post undergrad, I’ve never used one. Feels like a skill that can be taught when you need it.

I’m from Philadelphia. Of course I can imagine this.

Maybe the heat capacity of the food changed in transit?

Just started reading, referencing ratemyprofessors as a data point is an interesting choice.

(this is perhaps antiquated but....) Same way I felt when our library installed a book bot and you could no longer peruse other titles in the section.

When I don't know the minerals very well, I look at which crystal structure I prefer. Vesuvianite's is wild!

Obvious caveats apply here for students who have accommodations for more absences or who are going through life things that make it difficult to get there.

Honestly....points. We use PollEV. If they respond to 90% or more of the questions over the semester, they get full credit for attendance/participation. And then once they're there, active learning/flipped classroom w/ emphasis on how this practice will help them learn the material.

I use a 10 minute delay. Not too long that they get annoyed, but long enough that they might stop and think about what was wrong before selecting a new answer. Otherwise the MCQ just turn into whack-a-mole.

As a Philadelphian, it's always a disappointment when Kruk isn't on the broadcast.

Elizabeth Cerkez @zekrec.bsky.social · 23/08/2026

Kruk is late to phillies broadcast and after arriving, immedaitely starts a story about a deer and a jacuzzi. He is a treasure of my country, Philadelphia.

Same - it’s been so hard to wrap my mind around. My main worry with this is testing fatigue, so we’ll see how to goes.

Elizabeth Cerkez @zekrec.bsky.social · 23/06/2026

I think I figured out a way to do standards/spec grading with 200 people 😅. Going to have 8 units and they'll get a chance to "test" on each unit twice. Highest unit test counts towards the grade. Planning on doing staggered testing, so on each test day they'll do a repeat unit and a new unit.

I met someone at GRC last summer that was doing an index of papers in JChemEd and the one thing everyone agreed on was how horrible the search function is on that journal.

Probably has something to do with both the amount of material able to be covered in AP and the distance between when they completed the AP course and when they took their next chem course.

Elizabeth Cerkez @zekrec.bsky.social · 09/06/2026

My anecdotal experience is that students who sub Gen Chem I and II tend to have troubles once they get to the upper level, particularly in Analytical. But students who sub AP for Gen Chem I and take Gen Chem II generally do pretty well.

Super excited to share my book How and Why Soap Works came out today! Written for anyone interested in science and consumer products the book has 30 experiments you can do at home to explore the science of surfactants and recreate historic soap recipes. doi.org/10.1039/9781...

How and Why Soap Works: Thirty Home Experiments Exploring the Science of Surfactants

We wash with soap several times every day, but how does it get us clean? Soap has been used for centuries worldwide and is key to health and hygiene. But h

This is also going to encourage cheating - if the only way to get an A is going to be absolutely perfect, then some folks are going to choose any means which get them there.

Using OneNote on my iPad for lecturing in big classrooms. I can still do chalk talk style class and then I have a digital copy of the notes.
