That's been my usual MO, but the last two years I've waited until April because I owe the Feds and I'll be damned if I give this administration a cent any earlier than necessary.

On a reread of *The Left Hand of Darkness*. It's even better than I remembered. Really wish they had used the wild cover from the mass market version for the recent paperback release. I forget why I first bought it 20 years ago (I had never heard of UKLG), but I suspect the cover played a role.
Mass-market edition. A snowy, icy mountainscape at night. Prominent in the foreground is an ice-covered spire jutting out of the ground with two human faces, one feminine, the other masculine. In lovely 3D text is the name of the book A starburst, bifurcated vertically. On the left half, it is white at the center and fades to a pale sky blue near the edge; the right half is black at the center, and fades to a slightly darker sky blue. Behind the starburst is a field of stars

Happy International Asexuality Day! Asexual, often called “ace” for short, refers to a complete or partial lack of sexual attraction or lack of interest in sexual activity with others.
On a gradient background with the asexual flag colors, text reads, “Happy International Asexuality Day.” The HRC logo appears.

My cat has an uncanny knack of knowing how absorbed I am in reading. She runs up and starts demanding attention the moment I get engrossed in a story, then feigns disinterest and wanders off when I acknowledge her. Typical cat nonsense.

Lana Del Rey said it pretty well:
"Floors in an apartment." She shook her head. "Moby you know you're the man."
"Ha, thanks," I said.
"No, not like that. You're a rich WASP from Connecticut and you live in a five-level penthouse. You're 'The Man.' As in, 'stick it to The Man.' As in the person they guillotine in the revolution."

They've been trying to foist internet-enabled fridges on us for decades and I've yet to see one in the wild. Here's one from 2001 and another from 2004 (both from Popular Science)
A picture of a refrigerator with a screen on its door. Below it this blurb:

"You've got food"
Bringing the power of the Internet to the table-well, to the refrigerator anyway—e2 Home's Screenfridge lets you check weather and traffic reports, plan the week's menu, order groceries, and schedule family outings on its touchscreen. The Internet refrigerator is currently in trials in Denmark and could come to the United States as soon as next year. Price is not yet set. e2 Home AB, Lindhagensgatan 100, SE 11278, Stockholm, Sweden. www.e2-home.comAnother mini-article featuring a refrigerator with a screen on its door

Today: LG's Internet refrigerator ($8,000) and TV refrigerator ($3,000; lge.com) come with a Web pad or a television in the door. Samsung's Bottom Mount Refrigerator/Freezer ($900;
samsungusa.com) features two different cooling systems for the freezer and refrigerator. This allows for better humidity control, which keeps food fresh longer.
Tomorrow: New cooling technology will keep fruits and vegetables fresh twice as long and will operate virtually silently. RFID technology will manage food inventory, and cameras will allow remote monitoring.

Herman Melville on moderates, all the way back in 1857:
“You are an abolitionist, ain’t you?”
“As to that, I cannot so readily answer. If by abolitionist you mean a zealot, I am none; but if you mean a man, who, being a man, feels for all men, slaves included, and by any lawful act, opposed to nobody’s interest, and therefore, rousing nobody’s enmity, would willingly abolish suffering (supposing it, in its degree, to exist) from among mankind, irrespective of color, then am I what you say.”
“Picked and prudent sentiments. You are the moderate man, the invaluable understrapper of the wicked man. You, the moderate man, may be used for wrong, but are useless for right.”
