You see with too shallow a lens. Hopper used light and shadow as an “emotional language to express silence, isolation, and psychological depth”…as shown in New York Movie (1939), and Nighthawks (1942). Very noir-ish. FYI, the origins of film noir stretch back to the movie City Streets (1931).
