Today is day 1,132 of the @pghguild.com strike against @post-gazette.com. It’s also presumably the last day of the longest strike in Pittsburgh history. Bob puts it better here than I can, as I felt like Homer on Smartline many times. We won back our dental plan too, it just took a few extra days.

Noah Hiles, a sports reporter, alleged that he was told to help find minorities to fill sports editorial positions and that he was paid less than a minority hired for a sports editor position.

Judge Alston dismissed Mr. Hiles’ disparate pay claim because he failed to allege that he was “similarly situated in all respects” to the person who got the job. Mr. Hiles alleged that the company offered a higher rate of pay to the other individual after two other candidates declined the position. In other words, he alleged a non-discriminatory justification for the pay differential, which was fatal to his pay claim.

Thank fucking god. All of those bright white LED streetlights that were installed previously are so horrific for literally every living being. It’s supposed to be dark at night, not glaring like a suburban McMansion kitchen.

All of the new lights will have a color temperature of 2700k. DarkSky International, a nonprofit focused on reducing light pollution, recommends using lighting no higher than 3000k in order to minimize its impacts on migratory birds, wildlife and human health.

After seven years of dealing with these assholes, we heard a new argument yesterday. The Post-Gazette claimed that union CBAs, including things like union dues and any bargained topic, limits the freedom of workers by not allowing a company to give them more. www.unionprogress.com/2025/01/09/a...

Lowe criticized a January 2023 decision by Administrative Law Judge Geoffrey Carter that the PG had violated federal labor law by negotiating in bad faith and imposing work conditions. At one point, Lowe seemed to be making the point that any contract represents a loss of freedom. For example, a contract locks workers into certain holidays, without the option of adding other holidays.

The “loss of freedom” theory left striking newsroom workers scratching their heads. They wondered if they’d heard correctly. By Lowe’s measure, one suggested, owning a home represents a loss of freedom because homeowners are locked into sleeping under the same roof every night.
