Illegal in most of Australia too. You need dual consent to record.

Tooth also used to mean taste, lost now except in phrases like sweet tooth. But most writers today unconsciously expect -some to mean "a lot of something" and have reverse engineered a new meaning for toothsome as "very toothy". I suspect with time this meaning will take over as the standard. 3/3

-some denotes possession of the quality of the word it is attached to. Gladsome means "very glad", wholesome means "very whole", cumbersome means "very cumber" (a middle english word meaning to hinder). It is logical then for toothsome to mean "very toothy". Is it not? 2/3

I recently saw a complaint about people misusing toothsome to mean "lots of teeth". I'd thought that an acceptable meaning (spoilers: it is), but I realised I didn't know what the -some suffix is for. What does the "some" part actually mean in words like wholesome, cumbersome or gladsome? 1/3

The way indie music is seen as 'cool' and indie films are seen as 'embracing the craft without selling out' while indie books are seen as 'didn't get trad published' gives me feelings. Really crunchy feelings. The snobbery makes zero sense and instantly tells me someone isn't worth listening to.

Its also worth noting that as trad pub has increasingly adopted PoD for backlist and indent books, this isn't even exclusively a self-pub identifier.

I know it’s hard to watch all these beautiful things be carried away by time and see the wrong things growing in their place. But listen. Listen. We have to be the beautiful things now. It has to be us. It has to be us. Courage.

I think Patricia Briggs sort of laid most of the groundwork for the omega/alpha dynamics infiltrating popular werewolf romances. Knots probably appear in the furry fandom long before omegaverse tho if I had to guess.

Zack Bel @zackbel.bsky.social · 29/07/2026

Heat cycles have definitely crept in from omegaverse. I feel like the genres are feeding each other now, borrowing back and forth. I'd love to track down when knots became such a prevalent thing in paranormal tho. I'll have to pay more attention when I see it pop up and note publication dates.

Zack Bel @zackbel.bsky.social · 29/07/2026

I would argue the reverse is true: omegaverse is budget paranormal werewolf romance. Paranormal romance came first, then omegaverse jacked the werewolf pack dynamic stuff and mixed it with pon farr. Then a lot of omegaverse did away with the magical elements.

I wish it were true but an alarming number of the general public have wholesale bought the idea that arts degrees are bad and should be abolished, or at best, exclusively the domain of the rich. This is why policies restricting them and defunding them have been so easy for politicians to pass.

When they say wholesome, they mean "no gay people", when they say "optimistic" they mean "not having to think", when they say integrity they mean "black & white morality". They redefine normal words to cloak their intent to get it past the general public. 2/2

Zack Bel @zackbel.bsky.social · 05/05/2026

This is why the far right uses these words. To the uninformed public they sound good. "Stuff for kids should be wholesome, optimistic and have integrity!" But their definition of these words is not the same as yours. 1/2

Turnitin wasn't even good at its old job - old fashioned plagiarism detection. Turnitin is the reason my highschool teachers all warned us to use google docs so we could track changes and prove no plagiarism because it'd make false accusations so often.

I disagree. Australia has serious racism problems, no doubt, but it also has none of the jingoism, patriotic excess and belief in national exceptionalism. Australia's culture has begun to be eroded in recent years by nationalist politicians and media but at its core it is not.

The one on the left is an Indigenous man wearing a vest covered in beadwork, and the one on the right has paler skin and orange hair, wearing a blue shirt with tassels on the chest. Both have soft expressions as they hold hands. Gold decorations frame the corners of the image, and the text "We've Always Been Here" takes over the right side in flowy, mock-gold text.
