Some #gamedev progress updates: World generation is now multi-threaded and a lot smoother, even on single-thread web-builds. My UI scales off of DPI, reverses all the screen transforms, and rounds to an integer scale to keep the pixel-art crisp. This took literal months to get the math right lol.

I've been fighting with the weird quirks of #Godot 's TileMapLayer. You can see my tile placement multi-threading get interrupted and leave blank tiles lol. It's also still too laggy and stutters quite a bit. This is important to solve because my game is internally 3D voxels. #gamedev #solodev

Been re-designing my FSM yet again... Tried to go for more of a Resource-based design, but then realized my design started to get really nested and became harder to read in the inspector. Then I realizing my nested Resources were just re-invented #Godot nodes, so I just converted my system to that!

To get around #Godot 's limitation of TileMapLayer only holding a single TileSet, I've been working on a streaming TileSet that is dynamically created by loading/unloading other TileSets. This lets me split up TileSets and only actually worry about one global TileSet. #solodev #indiedev #gamedev

Strange that in my #Godot game, my dithering shader doesn't seem to be working in browser, but it does on the downloaded version 🤔 Both are using compatibility mode, so rendering should be the same, odd... ps, if you wanna try the latest web build: polzon.itch.io/quintessence #gamedev #indiedev

Second time this month that the tree in my front yard fell and hit my car. I have two cars, and now both have been crushed by the same tree 😤 I managed to get my car out and luckily only got some scratches, but I'm gonna take my revenge on this tree!!

This isnt very pretty, but that's not what matters here. I got my 2.5D physics working which was a big hurdle! Definitely need to work on improving the editor tooling to make lining up the 3D collisions easier. Then I can port my existing character behaviors to the new 2.5D system. #gamedev #godot

I asked #Gemini to review my portfolio personal website for an external perspective, and said I'm a "socialist web developer" 😅 I do radical socialist extremism like open-source code.

Some random map generation. Not good map generation, but it is in fact randomly generated! It may look like random TileMapLayers but I've really been cooking up a more advanced tile system on top of this. I also define tiles in as resources which automatically gets loaded. #gamedev #godot

A two panel meme. The title says "How to draw an owl. The first panel has rudimentary circles with the first step labeled as "1. Draw some circles". The second step is a very detailed owl with label "2. Draw the rest of the fucking owl".

I spend probably too much time on debug tools, but it's a great way to show off technical details! #gamedev #godot

I love adding small details like this. My character now smoothly rotates instead of snapping to a direction. Do you think this adds to the "feel" of movement or does it look weird? #gamedev #godot #pixelart

For #ScreenshotSaturday , I'm showing off a small detection tool that checks when my objects aren't sitting sitting pixel perfect (red highlights). I also modify all velocities so that my characters instead land on rounded pixel positions instead of a sub-pixel coordinate. #gamedev #godot #pixelart

Is this a #godot bug or am I missing something here? Is Color not a valid object?

shippage @zack.polson.dev · 17/10/2025
Once again messing with shaders and playing with color remapping. Maybe I need to add some kind of color correcting since there's too many situations where the lighting goes too extreme. I want a softer saturated look, and my characters will have strong black outlines. #godot #gamedev #pixelart

Yoink! Although I'm gonna see how intuitive it feels in a dual hand layout to support action buttons (roll, attack, etc). As much as I love portrait, I can't figure out good UX that handle action buttons well 😕 P.S: Game looks great on my Pixel Fold! (Main Menu scaled a bit weird though)

While working on my debug tool, it seems to uncover some strange oddities about the #GodotEditor . My tool is essentially just a parser for Node.get_orphan_node_ids(), and when ran inside of a tool script it seems to show orphans in #godot itself. I'm assuming these are orphaned for caching?

I had an idea about a co-op horror game (think REPO and Lethal Company), but focused around deep cave diving...

Discovered a nasty orphan node memory leak and still haven't quite found the source. While working on a fix, I created a neat little debugger plugin to view orphan nodes. Also added some alerts so errors are pushed as soon as orphan node leaks are introduced. #godot #solodev #gamdev
Screenshot of a work-in-progress debugger plugin for Godot Engine. It shows a new tab called "Orphan Tracker" that is selected and shows a long list of various nodes that are being leaked in the project.

Still not sure what I want for a title screen, but this is a nice WIP one for now. It's a straight up rip-off of Balatro's title screen lol. But, the swirling essence is what I imagined "Quintessence" to look like. It's supposed to be very purple-ly! #godot #gamedev

Tested it out and got promising results, thanks! I don't want it to zoom in my game subviewport too, but I'm thinking I can probably offset that by dividing the camera zoom by the content view scale or something.

Tracked down a really strange #Godot bug... As much as I love the idea behind Dynamic Refresh Rate, it has only caused me issues on #Windows Why is it capping my FPS to 60 despite a higher monitor refresh rate? 😞 #gamedev

As much as I hate #OpenAI as a company, I really think their UI/UX designers are the best. That's saying a lot because I think #Google has really nice UX too. Like idk what this blue orb is supposed to represent when it's listening to voice, but I like it.
Screenshot of OpenAI as Android's AI assistant listening for microphone input. It's represented as a blue orb that looks like a flowing sky.

Unfortunately this will be my *real* speeds, since I always keep my router connected to a Mullvad VPN. Would love to figure out how to boost these VPN speeds. Also would love to know if I could dynamically change Wireguard servers based off of speeds...
testmy.net speedtest with results of 393.2 Mbps download and 16.2 Mbps upload. This results are after being connected to Mullvad VPN Los-Angeles server.

Nice, got a WiFi 7 router and it was a massive speed boost. Finally hitting my 1Gbps advertised speeds. I picked up the Flint 3 from GL.iNet for like $180 (free shipping) and definitely recommend it. I mostly went with this specific company since their firmware is open-source and built on openWRT.
testmy.net speedtest results showing 984.6Mbps download and 343.1 Mbps upload internet speeds.

Yay it's super laggy but it *kinda* works. After several hours of wasting time on a random side project, I have my #Godot game (kinda) running on my #Anbernic #RG34XX Those are definitely some of my game's pixels... No idea where my character is lol.
Picture of my Anbernic RG34XX running my own Godot game. The character is missing but it's properly showing the tileset and shaders.

Showing off some #ScreenshotSaturday progress on my dither #shader effect! It correctly dithers the way I want it to. Still tweaking it, might want the effect a bit more pronounced, and having it just dither the lighting has been a bit meh. Also some music 😊 #godot #gamedev #pixelart

Nice, had me try this game and basically got the same score! Even chose the same ending lol. Honestly was really easy to remain consistent overall, I didn't even look at the metrics the game was trying to use.
