I've just returned from a family holiday at Sunny Beach, Bulgaria on the Black Sea. As you'd imagine, I went out as many mornings as I could for sunrise. The surprise on the penultimate morning was this GOLDEN JACKAL. Video handheld phone binned, hence the lack of quality!

In 2025, I failed to find any Small Red-eyed Damselfly on the Sankey Canal with just a decent number of Red-eyed Damselfly amongst the more standard Common Blue, Blue-tailed and Azure. In 2026, Small Red-eyed aren't far off outnumbering Red-eyed. A remarkable increase...or I'm just getting my eye in

Within the hotel grounds, I managed to find several Atlantic Lizard and East Canary Gecko. I was unable to find any Skinks to complete the set. A great holiday with @dannihinchy.bsky.social on an island im a big fan of. I'd love to go for longer and really explore far and wide like we did in 2019

Butterflies within the hotel were a tale of two halves. It started windy and we saw multiple Lang's Short-tailed Blue, Monarch and Small White. Later it calmed and they were replaced by Clouded Yellow, Painted Lady, Plain Tiger and African Grass Blue (my only lifer). Hummingbird Hawkmoth also seen

Bizarrely there was some form of an overflow pool of seemingly brackish water just outside the hotel. This was absolutely stacked with fish and these included Thick-lipped Mullet, Canary Damsel, Ornate Wrasse and most bizarrely several thousand Sailfin Molly of very many colour morphs.

Earlyish morning visits (sunrise wasn't until 7am!) saw me head south of the hotel to the arid areas immediately south of Las Salinas. Here a flock of 8 Trumpeter Finch, 4 Berthelot's Pipit, 3 Mediterranean Short-toed Lark and Southern Grey Shrike the highlights

The abundant Collared Dove plagued every left plate of food and walked amongst your feet. Facing east, each evening saw a huge movement of Cory's Shearwater with up for 80/minute for several evenings. 225 in ten minutes was a personal highlight. Raven, Kestrel & passing Spoonbill also highlights

The hotel itself was the Elba Sara located on the beach at the south end of the town. The hotel grounds were stacked with Spanish Sparrow with a small colony of Plain Swift and occasional Southern Grey Shrike.

Lovely little jack Pike this evening on the Sankey Canal. I'm told they potentially get up to 10lb in this canal, but I'd be surprised if this one was more than a lb. Cool fish though and my first on patch. Plenty of willow warbler, whitethroat and blackcap singing too #SankeyValley #PatchBirding

I can remain in Cheshire for another year 🙌🏻 a fruitless dawn raid on the Mersey at Runcorn bridge was always asking a lot, but luckily the family and I headed to Hoylake and Meols for lunch and had prolonged views of 4 Leach's Storm-petrels. Epic birds in every sense. @dannihinchy.bsky.social
