This sums up my feelings on the NHJ story pretty well. It was a moving read but it really highlights the limitations of liberal coded analysis and critique. Though she gestures towards the structural issues underpinning her story, her focus is the failure of individual teachers, admin, & schools.

the structures of professional growth expressed here should be something within our reach - they're already achieved in some small, select spaces - but this frame of discussion is treated as either a frivolous daydream or dangerous elitism by too much of the education and curricular policy space.

I am starting to wonder if this decade in education is going to be known as the decade where the disconnect between decision-makers in education and people actually in classrooms got so wide that something was permanently broken. This just isn't sustainable.

Technology being everywhere doesn’t mean it belongs everywhere. The tech industry wants us to believe that AI in early education is not only inevitable, but necessary. We don't see it that way. This week, we announced a moratorium on generative AI for public school students in 2-K to 8th grade.
We’re eliminating AI use for students in 2-K through 8th grade for the upcoming school year.

I’m not going to take the bait, but the argument that academics should not be judged for the money they take from ideological thinktanks, civics centers, & philanthrocapitalist foundations is either very naive or very compromised. Following the money is not paranoid style, it’s first principles.

Protest that endures, I think, is moved by a hope far more modest than that of public success: namely, the hope of preserving qualities in one's own heart and spirit that would be destroyed by acquiescence. Wendell Berry, What Are People For?

"You can't scale good teaching" is a remarkable claim--and an arguable claim--that should be at the center of this conversation and not an aside. You certainly can't scale something you don't invest in but of course you can scale good teaching if you do invest in it. /1
Hendrick admits Alpha School’s model is “not perfect.” But he argues that most kids aren’t getting a good teacher or instruction grounded in learning science in a classroom anyway. “You have massive variance in teacher quality and pupil outcomes in a way that most people would find shocking,” he says. “The variance within schools between teacher quality is often greater than the variance between schools. If you apply that to doctors or dentists, there’d be a public outcry.”

That’s Hendrick’s biggest argument for Alpha School’s model as a solution: “You can’t scale good teaching,” he says. Software, Hendrick argues, can be updated across classrooms at once as new curriculum and instructional research emerges and can give feedback far faster than a teacher grading assignments one by one.

Dancing ‘til the music stops.
Alphabet saw free cash flow turn negative in the second quarter for the first time in the Google parent's history as massive artificial-intelligence spending outpaced cash generation.
That's unsettling some investors because it highlights one of Wall Street's biggest debates about hyperscalers: Is the Al spending worth it if Big Tech companies begin outspending their operating cash flows to fund those ambitions?
On Thursday, the answer was no.
The stock down 6.4% to $320.10, making Alphabet the worst performer in the Dow Jones Industrial Average and putting it on pace for its largest one-day market cap loss ever, according to Dow Jones Market Data.
