Heated Rivalry may be a “homo-hockey smut sensation,” but the fight over who gets to claim it is a serious one. Writer Alexander Mooney lays out the stakes for Canada and connects the show to a longer history of American cultural annexation: thewalrus.ca/heated-rivalry-annex
On the left: a photo of Hudson Williams with his leg up on Mark Carney, who is wearing a white fleece sweater. On the right: text that reads “The US is trying to annex the ultra-Canadian Heated Rivalry. No, the TV series wasn’t “rescued” by HBO”

Heated Rivalry has quietly become one of Canada’s most potent cultural exports. The Walrus editorial fellow Amarah Hasham-Steele breaks down the numbers behind its staggering success and what they mean for Canadian soft power: thewalrus.ca/heated-rivalry-numbers
On the left: a photo of two hockey players facing off in front of a ref. On the right: text that reads “Just how big is Heated Rivalry? Really big. The numbers behind the smash-hit are incredible—and growing every day”

Hockey’s homoeroticism has always existed—Heated Rivalry’s just made it hyper visible. Journalist Nicky Taylor considers the queer undercurrents of Canada’s beloved national sport and how the show turns them into a celebration of desire: thewalrus.ca/heated-rivalry-hockey
On the left: a photo of a shirtless man smiling with press microphones in the bottom of the image. On the right: text that reads “Heated Rivalry proves hockey has basically always been gay. What a beauty! Look at what he can do with his hands!”

Hold your kids and hold your community close. My thoughts are with everyone in Tumbler Ridge. My heart is with those facing unimaginable loss, with those injured, and with first responders and those who jumped into action. Practice love, generosity, and kindness in the days and the road ahead.

When the monopoly right granted by copyright is compounded by the speed and scale of media company mergers, we end up with a crisis in creativity. www.eff.org/deeplinks/2...

Copyright Should Not Enable Monopoly
There’s a crisis of creativity in mainstream American culture. We have fewer and fewer studios and record labels and fewer and fewer platforms online that serve independent artists and creators.

Finally, a bank (is EQ a bank?) that supports passkeys. 🤩 Manulife also supports passkeys, but not synced passkeys. Yes, synced passkeys are potentially worse than device-bound, but I think I am qualified to determine my own threat model thank you very much.

CIRA President & CEO Byron Holland shares his statement welcoming this decision and underscoring the importance of made-in-Canada digital services.
CIRA welcomes the decision of the Government of Canada to pursue a Canadian sovereign cloud. As a national organization that runs critical infrastructure in Canada, CIRA is well aware of the challenges businesses face when trying to build made-in-Canada digital services. Sovereign cloud computing power is not about protectionism; it is about resiliency. A resilient internet in Canada, which includes Canadian cloud services, makes us stronger and is critical to Canada’s global competitiveness. We are encouraged by the government’s foresight in this decision.

Comcast is now available in Canada 🤮 They sent the original email to an email address that I don't publish anywhere and haven't created any account with. (my reply is from a different, generic email address) You can report spam like this to the Canadian Spam Reporting Centre for violating CASL.

Grindr’s AI forays amount to “data surveillance,” EFF’s Paige Collings told Gazetteer SF. “There are real life consequences for very vulnerable communities,” and if LGBTQ+ protections are weakened, “the risk of this over the next few years is heightened.”

I haven't noticed the Canada Post strike much, yet. I probably will when some overseas parcels reach Canada. I much prefer Canada Post for last-mile delivery though, for a very simple reason: They're the only deliveryservice with a key to every apartment building.
