The last two/three Protomartyr albums are their best. Always dug em (very much) but their growth into a sumptuous Tindersticks/Psychedelic Furs/Amebix heavy noir project is a delight to behold.

Happy anniversary to this show. When Jack White said, “thank you to Kid Congo & Monkeybirds , the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and… all the other bands,” on a four band bill, he may as well have said, “Zack, have you ever considered a future in rock criticism?”

Refreshing r/goth, feverishly anticipating the atom-bat-bomb level discourse that’s gonna go down when some scamp posts the new QOTSA single.

Possibly the most obscure thing I’ll ever ask, but anyone know who, in his King Sunny Ade piece, Greg Tate is referencing here? “the most cryptic, discordant, and unnerving sound I’ve ever heard in my life. The drums seem to be preparing for war, the voices for a party…”

Liner notes by me! It’s an oral history of a great band breaking up, but making sure they played enough dice in the studio to take Guy Picciotto for all his $ before they did so. Thank you! Thats very kind! (I should clarify tho that, I had no relationship with the quietus in 2017 so my hurt feelings, if not dissipated, were moved over to other areas within my professional life. Where they will fester until called upon. 😀)

I was like “do they think I don’t have opinions about ac/dc and/or push the sky away????” I almost checked to see if an invite went to spam. Imagine my relief! My only real complaint is… c’mon, everyone knows the last few Beefheart albums are the best ones.

Zachary Lipez @zacharylipez.bsky.social · 15/09/2026

be sure to read my ac/dc thing kindly linked on the bottom. Still the best thing I or anyone else on the planet has ever written about music. A few Quietus readers were babies about the skinhead part! Very hurtful! I’m still waiting for my apology from the ones that have since heard nü oï! Or AC/DC!

I was a bit hurt that I wasn’t asked to contribute to this @thequietus.com list, seeing as it covers so much ground which I’ve dug into in recent years. Then I noticed it’s from 2017, so now I hope I didn’t read it then + been ripping it off for a decade. Fun list tho! thequietus.com/opinion-and-...

The release “party” must have been early October, at the Parkside. The air was white whenever the wind shifted and even though some other friends were going to C squat, I wondered off into it and I was so drunk I thanked a cop for his service. He appropriately rolled his eyes.
