I understand that there are established norms against clapping after mass. But the same way praise for the Church Triumphant does not diminish praise for God, encouragement for the Church Militant does not as well.

There was spontaneous applause from the congregation. And I felt that this is what a community should be, encouraging. Performing a duty is a joy, but it can also be very exhausting.

At the end of mass yesterday, the elderly priest said that he felt a but sad because he had some pain in his throat. But saying mass tonight made him felt content because he felt useful to the Lord. #CatholicSky

That’s true. Social constructions do not exclude divine revelation. There’s a lot to be criticized with Lewis’s approach but there’s also much to learn. It’s refreshing to see someone defend ‘objective’ morality but then again it’s an old book
130
Yvan @yvanysmael.bsky.social · 13/06/2026
But I imagine CS Lewis saying that there is consistency across these social constructions across different independent societies to justify his divine claim.

Yvan @yvanysmael.bsky.social · 13/06/2026
Sorry, I think we live in different timezones. 😂 I find Durkheim more persuasive here, to be honest. I think the collective conscience is really a social construction.

Yvan @yvanysmael.bsky.social · 12/06/2026
I think tradition is what Durkheim meant. In a way, he challenges that idea that there’s anything supernatural to the “voice within us”.
110
Yvan @yvanysmael.bsky.social · 12/06/2026
In Elementary Forms of Religious Life, Durkheim uses the same inner voice to argue about the sui generis characteristic of Society. Suggesting that there is nothing metaphysical about this voice, that it is only the burden of history over our minds. Quite interesting.

Yvan @yvanysmael.bsky.social · 12/06/2026
One of the arguments of Mere Christianity is that each of us have this inner voice that teaches right and admonishes against wrong. No matter the historical context, it exists. For C. S. Lewis, that voice is God.

Shared my thoughts again with SCMP, this time on OFWs and homesickness. “The ubiquity of these institutions, the volume of Filipinos already working abroad, and the perception of limited opportunities at home could promote the option of going abroad,” Yonaha said. amp.scmp.com/week-asia/pe...

The Philippines’ low ranking in the report is unsurprising because long working hours, being constantly on-call for work, and a lack of job flexibility reflect a poor workplace culture across the country, according to Yonaha. sc.mp/u7d7t?fbclid...

Philippines scores poorly on work-life balance. Filipinos are not surprised
Low wages, poor workplace culture and heavy traffic are among the factors hampering Filipinos from enjoying a good work-life balance.

But with hope, you walk through a valley of darkness and fear no evil. And there's something to be grateful for in that

In my conversation with my spiritual director, I realized that my resistance to gratitude is related to my complicated relationship with #hope. Without hope, without the expectation of temporal and eternal salvation, how could we be grateful for the pain and failures of the present moment?

Last week's RDL was about #gratitude. It was straightforward until I got to the part asking if I was grateful for pain and failures. Naturally, I was not. How could anyone ever be thankful for that? I asked my spiritual director about the line between mindful gratitude and #self-delusion.

One thing I learned from #Arendt is that pluralism is a fact of life. People come from a multitude of perspectives, and this is unavoidable. To believe that we could somehow reach a monolithic view is a delusion. The way forward is to manage these differences without compromising action.
