A fine example of the Japanese art of tsundoku, piling up books you've bought but haven't got around to reading. The Heights by Ian Rankin tops a pile, Exit Party by Emily St. John Mandel on the other.

Andy Burnham v John Swinney

We are now on the eve of the SNP’s annual conference, and there has been a surprising development - Prime Minister Andy Burnham is due to make his first major public visit to Scotland on Friday.

There’s a bit of an unwritten rule that parties don’t step on each other’s toes when it comes to their conferences, yet Mr Burnham has decided to bring the Downing Street circus to Scotland during Mr Swinney’s big moment.

So how should we see this move? Does this move come from a place of confidence, or a place of fear?

SNP conference is always a major date in the nationalists’ calendar, and this year they will be wanting to have a bit of a celebration after winning a historic fifth term in office. Mr Burnham’s visit does somewhat detract from this, as a lot of today’s papers are instead focusing on Mr Burnham’s visit instead.

But those in favour of Mr Swinney’s premiership might see this move as evidence that the First Minister has got under Mr Burnham’s skin.

To be fair, Mr Swinney did feature prominently in Mr Burnham’s own conference speech a couple of weeks ago. Perhaps the “misunderstanding” about the future of Scottish independence from the Prime Minister recently is the reason for this.

SNP invite Andy Burnham to conference ahead of visit to Scotland

Exactly.
Lina Khan on X:

Law enforcers already have authority to charge companies and their CEOs for creating and releasing dangerous, unvetted, or defective products. We shouldn’t let discussions about new legal regimes distract from the fact that there’s no AI exemption from laws already on the books — a point @FTC emphasized repeatedly during my tenure.

1. There is an extensive set of laws that govern dangerous and defective products. For example, releasing unvetted AI models or agents can violate consumer protection laws. Shipping flawed AI tools without implementing adequate measures to detect and stop rogue or defective AI agents can be an “unfair or deceptive” act or practice under the FTC Act (and analogous state laws).

'Men never have to deal with this nonsense' is indeed the point of this article. 👇
However, for women outside Hollywood, escaping the tyranny of the hair dye bottle is not always so easy.

“Being able to embrace your grey hair proudly is a privilege,” says Stacey Duguid. In June, Duguid, a former fashion editor, began documenting her struggles to find a job aged 52 despite her decades of experience. She told her followers that she had downsized her house and was now on universal credit. She received thousands of messages from fellow middle-aged women also struggling to find employment.

“There is a reluctance for women who are trying to get back into the workplace to go grey,” Duguid says. “To do it, you are most likely already in a senior position in the workplace. As an unemployed, broke, single parent it wasn’t an option for me.”

UCU staff at Dundee University went on strike for three weeks last year

The latest of wave of cuts was announced in June proposing to close 187 posts, however that figure fell to 154 job losses by August.

Since the announcement, UCU bosses said there had been 149 applications for voluntary redundancies, which should now rule out the need for compulsory redundancies.

Dr. Melissa D'Ascenzio, co-president of the Dundee UCU branch told BBC News: "None of our members want to go on strike for five weeks, this is absolutely last resort that we've come to.

"The university is still refusing to remove the threat of compulsory redundancy.

The university previously reopened a voluntary redundancy scheme

The University of Aberdeen is not alone in Scotland's higher education sector in making cost-cutting measures.

The University of Edinburgh announced it was to seek £140m in cuts to tackle financial difficulties in February last year.

The Scottish government bailed out Dundee University with £40m of emergency funding to help it through a financial crisis.

Strikes over cost-cutting have also taken place at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, while Strathclyde University announced plans to cut 70 jobs in December.

Palantir tightens grip on UK infrastructure with no-bid grid operator deal Controversial US firm’s British state involvement keeps growing despite concerns www.computing.co.uk/news/2026/go...
Britain’s National Energy System Operator (Neso) has awarded controversial software firm Palantir a £21m contract without inviting competitive bids.

The state-owned operator said it could not invite rival bids for “technical reasons”, citing a legal exemption that removes the requirement to consider other suppliers if existing dependencies mean that there is no feasible alternative to the software (Palantir’s Foundry operating system) in question. The contract was an extension of a previous agreement with Palantir that began in 2023 but had not been previously disclosed and covers the system which manages connections to the electricity grid and monitors “skip rates”, which is the rate at which more expensive sources of power are selected when cheaper ones are available.

Neso said the original Palantir contract did not need to be disclosed because it was not publicly owned at the time. Neso became public body in October 2024.

“Manchesterism” is recognised as his guiding star.

At least in principle, it is clear what the term means and doesn’t mean. It is not, he says, Thatcherism, Blairism or neoliberalism. Manchesterism is the view that ministers or mandarins in Whitehall do not know best. That local people, led by directly elected local politicians, know what works and doesn’t work where they live.

There is a lot to be said for this. Burnham’s focus on “people and place” over central government diktat resonates not only in Manchester but in Newcastle, Birmingham, Bristol and Norwich, to name but a few great English cities. It should also appeal in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Swansea, Cardiff, Belfast and Londonderry. What’s not to like about a devolution prime minister?

Regrettably, if you are in Scotland, Ireland or Wales, the answer is quite a lot. Recent events have demonstrated that Burnham appears to be the devolution prime minister only for England. He appears not to properly understand how government works, or how people feel, north of Hadrian’s Wall, west of Offa’s Dyke or across the Irish Sea. Appearance counts.

I like this analogy from Cal Newport 👇 calnewport.com/has-ai-gone-...
I liken the deployment of these long-horizon LLM-powered agents to strapping a weedwhacker to your dog to see if it will end up cleaning the overgrowth in your backyard. If that dog jumps the fence and ends up damaging cars on your street, you wouldn’t shake your head and lament about how the dog/whacker system had “gone rogue”; you would instead concede that dogs are unpredictable, so it was dumb to attach something dangerous to one.

Electoral system
See also: Elections in Sweden

The Riksdag is made up of 349 seats elected by open list proportional representation, with an electoral threshold of 4% of the national vote or alternatively 12% within a single constituency. Of the 349 seats, 310 are elected from 29 constituencies ranging in size from 2 to 40 seats, while the other 39 seats are apportioned nationally as levelling seats to ensure parties that passed the 4% national threshold hold a proportional number of seats; these levelling seats are allocated to particular districts. If a party wins more constituency seats than it is entitled to overall, a redistribution of constituency seats may occur to reduce the number of constituency seats won by that party.

Both the Holyrood and Westminster parliaments need to get tough on this matter. The public has been robbed, British sport has been done a grave disservice, and Scotland - and the city of Glasgow in particular - were unquestionably cheated.

Parliamentary committees on media, culture and sport should summon the current corpus of clowns who run the BBC north and south of the border and grill them until the truth emerges.

If it should come to pass that there was some sort of wilful or deliberate downplaying of the Games in Scotland which didn’t need to happen, then heads should roll - and the BBC should be forced to apologise to the people of Glasgow.

Is it a U-turn? I'm not sure
After the podcast recording, Doogan reached out to U-turn on his position.

He said: “The key point I was making, albeit clumsily, is that the SNP will demand Scotland’s democratic right to choose our own future is respected, regardless of who is in government at Westminster.

"The SNP is clear that the very real threat of a Nigel Farage Reform UK government makes it all the more important that Scotland has a choice over our future with an independence referendum.

"Unlike the Labour Party and the Tories, the SNP will never work with Reform or do any deals with them.

“What we will do is continue to fight for the democratic right of the people of Scotland to choose their own future – and voting SNP is the only way to lock Nigel Farage out of power in Scotland and secure an independence referendum."
