this whole scene practically wrote itself bc i love xingqiu and hu tao's friendship That Much.

“—but out of everyone in our class, you’re the one always going to office hours and sticking around to talk to our TA after class. I’m just saying. It doesn’t look strictly platonic to me.”

“And you’d know aaaaall about strictly platonic, wouldn’t you?” Hu Tao drawls.

“Don’t change the subject,” Xingqiu says sternly, even as his ears go red. “This is about you, Hu Tao.”

Hu Tao wraps her hands around her own paper cup of coffee. She blows lightly on it, then takes a leisurely sip, keenly aware of Xingqiu’s eyes on her the entire time.

“Listen, Xingqiu,” she says finally. “This isn’t like one of your novels, alright? Not a romantic story like none that has ever come before, or anything like that. It’s just a silly little crush. It’ll pass.”

A triumphant little smirk pulls at the corner of Xingqiu’s mouth. “So it is a crush.”

Needless to say, that really wasn’t what Hu Tao hoped Xingqiu would take away from that statement. Perhaps being serious wasn’t the right approach. She pastes a matching smirk on her own face. “With all due respect, Qiuqiu, aren’t you kinda the last guy who should be giving me this kind of advice?”

“You’re saying that like there’s no respect due at all,” Xingqiu huffs. He’s right. Hu Tao’s nice enough not to say so. “If I confess, it irrevocably torpedos my oldest and closest friendship—“

”Aiya, Xiangling would be so sad to hear that. And isn’t it a little presumptuous of you to think it’d be a torpedo—“

“And if you confess,” Xingqiu says loudly over her, “the best-case scenario is that she likes you too, and the worst-case scenario is that she doesn’t and she fades out of your life after being there for eleven weeks.”

He pauses, and finally takes a sip of his own coffee, and then immediately pulls a face. Grabbing a sugar packet from the container on their table, he tears it open, dumping the entire packet into his coffee. He frowns at it for a moment, then adds another packet for good measure. He sips again, then nods, satisfied.

“Although I think you should wait until the end of the quarter, at least,” he adds as a postscript. “Yanfei-qianbei seems like she’s a stickler about conflicts of interest.”

happy birthday xingqiu 💙 in honor of xingqiu going through the asian kid canon event of sublimating your hopes and dreams to the family business, here's part of my latest modern au wip, featuring xq and ht in business school

MGMT 200: Intro to Law (November 2014)

“Listen,” Xingqiu says darkly, curling his hands around his still-steaming paper cup of coffee. “I followed you into this program. You’d better not desert me for law school just because you’re in love with our Intro to Law TA. We have to get our MBAs together. You promised.”

“Aiya, Qiuqiu, so quick to read into things! What if I’m simply interested in this class for the sake of understanding the law better?”

Xingqiu stares at Hu Tao, deeply unimpressed.

“Wow, that’s exactly the way Chongyun looks at me!” Hu Tao chirps. “Now that you’re roommates, he must really be rubbing off on you, huh?”

She recognizes the innuendo a moment too late. Still, if there’s one thing Hu Tao can always be counted on to do, it’s to commit to a bit. She throws an exaggerated wink in to seal the deal; it works like a charm, and Xingqiu flushes bright red.

In her great magnanimity, Hu Tao opts not to say something along the lines of I can’t believe neither of you have confessed that you’re in love with each other when you literally live together. Instead, she kicks at Xingqiu’s shins under the table. “A-ny-way, isn’t it a bit too early to be worrying about your MBA? Come on, little Qiuqiu, this is the first quarter of your freshman year! Live a little!”

“Don’t call me that, you’re literally one year older than me,” Xingqiu grouses.

Hu Tao rests her chin in her hands, bestowing her sunniest smile upon Xingqiu, and singsongs, “But while we’re on campus, I’m your respectable senior!”

“Since when are you respectable—”

“And speaking as your very-much-respected senior, you’re supposed to listen to my advice! Where is Chongyun, anyway? Don’t tell me he didn’t want to hang out with me. I’ll be heartbroken.”

“He went home to visit his mothers this weekend. He said he wouldn’t be able to focus on his assignments with you chattering, anyway.”

”It’s not my fault poor Yunyun is so easily distracted.”

Xingqiu ignores the slight to his not-boyfriend’s honor, wrenching the conversation inelegantly back to the original topic. “Really, though. Maybe you’re not going to abandon me for law school—”

“Perish the thought!”

happy birthday chongyun 🩵 this year i'm bringing my "accidental baby acquisition" wip to the birthday potluck

Snippet 1/2 of a fic wip:

"I. Um. Did I miss something.”

In all fairness, Xingqiu can understand how Chongyun feels. If he went off somewhere—let's say Inazuma—on business for a month, and came back to find his husband cradling a baby, "did I miss something?" would be the least of his questions.

However, Xingqiu is Xingqiu, a year of (legal) marriage notwithstanding; the urge to tease Chongyun is simply something he'll never outgrow. "Yunyun, don't you remember that night before you left? She's ours," he says, perhaps a little dramatically.

Chongyun's face flushes red, perhaps remembering the aforementioned night. All he says in reply, though, is, "I was gone for a month. There's no way that was long enough for you to bear a child. Not unless Adeptus Xiao somehow knocked me out for eight extra months and didn't tell me."

"Time passes funnily up in Jueyun Karst. You never know," Xingqiu says sagely.

Snippet 2/2 of a fic wip:

"I'd hope you would send word if you were expecting a child. My training can wait—you're far more important. And, well, it'd be my fault if you were ever in a situation like that, so I should be there to support you." His face somehow, impossibly, goes even redder. "Um. In any case. I know the treatment you underwent makes something like that pretty unlikely."

A snappy reply of Not impossible, though! crawls to Xingqiu's mind, and then dies on his lips in the face of Chongyun's utmost sincerity. He relents. "Alright, alright, I didn't magically give birth in the month you were gone. But something came up with the Guhua Clan just yesterday…"

The baby in Xingqiu's arms stirs for the first time. He's honestly quite impressed she slept through everything before this. She cracks one eye open, brilliant gold meeting Chongyun's eyes for the first time.

"Her name is Yunli," Xingqiu says. "Her grandfather was a disciple of the Guhua Clan. Her father was a blacksmith at the Blackcliff Forge."

"Was?" Chongyun reaches a finger out toward Yunli, his gaze unreadable.

"Was," Xingqiu confirms. Yunli reaches out a tiny fist, wrapping it around Chongyun's finger. "There was an accident at the Blackcliff Forge two days ago…"
