New post at dengiebioregion.blog/2026/06/10/t... It’s murder on the shop floor/you better not disapprove #DengieBioregion
Screenshot of a blog post titled “the communities we serve.” The post features a wide-angle photograph of the nearly empty interior of the Burnham-on-Crouch East of England Co-op store, showing bare shelving, vacant display areas, and a few people walking through the brightly lit supermarket. Beneath the image is an excerpt explaining that the last fresh food delivery has arrived, the store will close in three days, and no replacement supermarket is expected until a Sainsbury’s opens later in the year. The post is dated 10 June 2026.

Featured article titles are scattered across the cover in black and white text, including Future Rural Reviewed, Dengie in Drought, Neo-rurality, Mezzo-level Entities, Transition Troughs, Local Nature Recovery, and Net Stupid Zero. At the bottom is the date May 2026 beside a small dark-grey logo. Background is a textured wash of warm ochre, pink and peach colours, overlaid with a faint outline map of the Dengie Peninsula. Overlaid is text in black reading: 't John’s Day, 24th June 2045. It’s the eighth day in a row over 40°C, but the breakfast briefing from your AMi said Britain needs to prepare for -20°C winters. You’re walking the seawall between Sales Point and St Lawrence and there’s no shade - but someone's got to fix the wires on that rad sensor! This path wasn’t here 20 years ago. In the winter of 2034, a deep, intense Atlantic depression tracked south-eastwards down the North Sea, reaching the Essex coast during a high spring tide, and a breach took out a section of wall west of the old nuclear station. All the effort went into keeping the atomic carcass dry and the old alignment wasn't repaired. South of St Peter’s Chapel, other rifts mean there’s no decent route at all now. When the tide comes in, it goes a quarter of a mile inland. The fields inward of the breaches are brackish and strange, there’s hints of saltmarsh returning behind where the walls stood, the seasonal birds come in sky-darkening flocks and seals swim up the creeks, but it remains a broken, brittle landscape still in the process of becoming something else. The wind farm’s back online, remodelled to something closer to its offshore kin now the tides tickles it's towers. The mud walk out to service the turbines is worse than the mission you're on now though, so small mercies. and all that'

Despairing at the HS2 debacle and the Lower Thames Crossing inanity, I thought I'd cheer myself up by imaging a new Essex rail corridor - the Gemstone: Connecting East Anglia and Essex to Kent and the continent!
A railway map of South Essex, and North Kent with a new line added in purple connecting Beaulieu Park Station to the London, tilbury and Southend line around Pitsea. Another new purple line connects Tilbury to the HS1 line east of Ebbsfleet. Text in purple in the tope left corner of the map reads: 'GREAT EASTERN MAIN LINE to HS1 CONNECTOR'. The map sits on a wider purple sheet in landscape. To the right of the map is the British Rail double arrow logo, below which is written 'GEMSTONE'

We won’t be able to defend some areas against the sea in the long term. We need to consider where to retreat from the current coastline. For Hamburg we need a plan to move the city 30 or 50 kilometers inland to the northeast by 2200 #ManagedRetreat
Screen grab of text from linked article. Reads:

Among your 10 specific demands to policymakers is one that calls for “debating a withdrawal from low-lying coastal regions of the North and Baltic Seas.” Until now, this has been taboo.

KR: In the very long run, over many decades to a century or more, sea levels could rise sharply. That is why we must start discussing it now. If we act early, we will have the time for careful adjustments.

FB: We won’t be able to defend some areas against the sea in the long term. We also need to consider where to retreat from the current coastline. For Hamburg, for instance, we need a plan to move the city 30 or 50 kilometers inland to the northeast by 2200. To be clear, no one is suggesting mass relocation tomorrow. But we can already ask whether it makes sense to build a new technology park or major production site right by the shore.
