fuck sorry how could I forget! during the second half I had this older posh French woman - the scariest thing a person can be - relentlessly chat to her mate next to me, so half an hour in I had to say "excusez-moi madame, vous parlez vraiment beaucoup" and it was terrifying but I was so brave

ah yeah and the bit that decisively broke me - arguably too early in the day! - was that merry band of Bretons arriving, all of them around the age of my great-grandparents, and probably from the next town over, if not from the actual village they would have lived in then, ahhhh (anyway, done now)

oh you should! Ernaux vv good for people learning French I think as her prose is so sparse yet precise - La Place obv v good (and also where I started, as it happens) but I'd say Les Annees is the real mindblowing one

Would like to add a personal note to this. The ESRC showed remarkable vision in funding this but @anandmenon.bsky.social brought the energy it needed to be the success it is. It was a model for the kind of academic I had always wanted to be but which really had no place in the existing structures
