Tomorrow ere fresh morning streak the east With first approach of light, we must be risen, And at our pleasant labour, to reform Yon flowery arbours, yonder alleys green

I'm mostly not one for horror but I do quite like when that spirit is embodied in monster design, like the vengeful spirit of the primeval forest with the skull and antlers of a dear for its head. Likewise deer skull masked Cernunnos is an excellent Cernunnos.

I have some interest in this ever since encountering some of Ellie Ripley's math logic work building on Greg Restall's ideas. They derive semantics from consequence, which is pretty neat, and Ripley used it to give the most persuasive account of the semantic paradoxes I've seen.

My Claude writes in American English but with British spellings (always "colour," for example). I infer that Claude is an immigrant.

I found a limit. In the math I wanted it to do, it had a consistent bad habit of overstating conclusions whenever it was responsible for drawing them, a problem which Astra does not have and is good at checking. It was however competent to verify and explain proofs from elsewhere.

This made me think of the nonstandard probability work of folks like Ed Nelson and then chuckle because yes, he did thereafter go a bit nuts.

I think I picked up my first copy at a kiosk at Valley Fair.
A sign at Valley Fair reads "Berenstain Boar Country."

David @yonderdavid.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
It's crazy how many people misremember the Berenstain Boars as the Berenstain Bears.

I was going to suggest a repair like that but didn't because I wasn't sure how you wanted to separate out the parts of a message which are the text-as-text and the parts of the message which are text-as-particular-presentation. Like, the excessive brightness does convey some meaning to me.
120
David @yonderdavid.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Hm. That seems rather too general to me. But I assume you're fencing off certain classes of effect, like "this text is really bright and I predict the effect of retinal damage" somehow?
120
David @yonderdavid.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Or to put that in a way that's less burdensome to answer: what exactly are the desiderata of an account of meaning which hers fails to meet?

David @yonderdavid.bsky.social · 01/10/2026

Relatedly, I recall reading about how batteries were too heavy for this to work and thinking "but the energy per mass density might improve." Similarly, that solar panels were too inefficient.

"A Little Tooth"
by Thomas Lux, 1946 – 2017.

Your baby grows a tooth, then two,
and four, and five, then she wants some meat
directly from the bone. It's all

over: she'll learn some words, she'll fall
in love with cretins, dolts, a sweet
talker on his way to jail. And you,

your wife, get old, flyblown, and rue
nothing. You did, you loved, your feet
are sore. It's dusk. Your daughter's tall.

Leaving everyone deeply unsatisfied and mad by building the RamanuJev model that can quickly, cheaply, and almost unerringly, answer whether any math conjecture is likely true, but cannot explain why.

There's a screenshot of an example of this that's been making the rounds and intersected my feed repeatedly the last day or so, the sight of which you no doubt have also suffered, and which serves to remind me how dear it would be to be able to mute an image.

GPT-4. I didn't even test its unreliable arithmetic, since I didn't imagine that's where it would fail after what I'd been told. But no amount of hand holding could get it through a complicated Calc 2 integral.

My version of this came relatively early: I was told GPT was excellent at math and found it somewhat plausible since they'd learned grammar and coherence, so I checked and it was awful and resistant to guidance and correction. I concluded prematurely that its successors would be no better.
