@joschi #AI slop (just like Jellyfin). github.com/sponsors/quick104 #noai
What sponsorship pays for

* AI development tooling (Claude, Codex). This is the largest cost by far, and it's what lets a small team ship server, web, iOS, tvOS and Android.

My brother pointed out to me that #Trump reveals how dumb he is in two ways: 1. He doesn't know the word dumb has a 'b' in it (he says that most people don't know things that he doesn't). 2. By making the insult "dumocrats" he renders the insult meaningless […] [Original post on mastodon.social]

New #jellyfin is out and I continue to not "appreciate" their acceptance of #llm #genai contributions: jellyfin.org/posts/state-of-the-fin… I'm guessing there aren't any other decent #opensource alternatives, but if there are, please reply!
The Jellyfin Team is made up of a lot of different people, and everyone has different levels of acceptance of/interest in code that an AI agent has contributed to. This policy has been made to try and help find a path that everyone can at least appreciate, even if they don't fully agree.

#Mozilla is offering $300 USD to test their new #AI Window feature in #Firefox for a week. This is the most I have heard of Mozilla paying for a user study, and I imagine it must be since AI is so generally unpopular (apparently, only the #iranwar and […] [Original post on mastodon.social]

As someone who expressed interest in our AI developments, we'd like to invite you to participate in our paid user research. Participants will have early access to our Smart Window experience and be rewarded for their honest opinion. Your involvement will directly shape the experience design before it rolls out to millions of people!

If you’re interested in taking part, here are some details:

• Participants will be given early access to the Smart Window experience - this is in beta and not everything may work perfectly.

• This study will last for 7 days (Monday, March 23 - Sunday, March 29), and you will be asked to use this new browser as you normally would during that time.
Each day you will log a diary entry and may be asked to complete a short activity, such as sending a written or audio note response to a prompt or posting on a discussion board. On the last day, you will record a closing assessment. This should take no more than 20-30 min per day.

• The diary entries and activities can be completed right from your home computer, as we’ll set you up with our online research platform and its built-in tools.

• Upon completion of the study, participants will receive $300 USD (or its equivalent in your local currency) as our thanks for your time and feedback.

We'll review responses and be back in touch within the next 2-3 weeks.

Thanks for helping us improve Mozilla Firefox!

The Smart Window Team

Any #Mozilla #Firefox fans know what is going on here? I have the "kill switch" enabled, but I have a 57mb model on my disk that I surely didn't ask for. The model page on Hugging Face is: huggingface.co/Mozilla/static-embed… which doesn't tell […] [Original post on mastodon.social]

Saw that the #selfhosting community on #reddit was giving into #genai posts. Posted about it, and was censored (moderated) in short order. The commons is being hollowed out, one step at a time […] [Original post on mastodon.social]

Title: Just saw the rules update: I removed this sub-reddit from my RSS reader
Description: If the moderation team doesn't care, the users won't care, and if the users don't care, everyone is just going to accept that selfhosted apps just means slop.

Good for people who do content creation around this stuff, but bad for people on social or on AI platforms (and search engines) that rely on the free curation performed by the people on social media.

Hope the people that stick around enjoy the wild west this place is about to become!

#Mozilla #AI #firefox "While we are still guided by full manifesto, five principles are especially relevant in the age of AI." The five principles: stateof.mozilla.org/manifesto
Three principles are shown:

 HUMAN AGENCY

in a world of AI and agents, it is more important than ever that technology is designed in ways that let people shape their own experiences online — and optimize for privacy where it matters to them most.

DECENTRALIZATION AND OPEN SOURCE

an open, accessible internet depends on innovation and decentralized participation in the creation and use of technology. The success of open source AI built around transparent community practices is critical to making this possible in the AI era.

BALANCING COMMERCIAL AND PUBLIC BENEFIT

more than ever, the direction of the internet and AI is defined by commercial players. We also need a strong cadre of public benefit players to create balance in the overall ecosystem.

I guess the #AI #Mozilla is using doesn't know how to spell "Product". stateof.mozilla.org/rebels Archive.org ends up with a broken page unfortunately, due to Mozilla's introduction animation.

On the R line this morning on the #nyc #subway and it hasn't yet been outfitted with an Orwell style telescreeen (yet). It's a relief compared to the new ones that constantly call attention to themselves.

Loved reading this article by Vox - archive.ph/bRoAC The headline seems to promise a definitive conclusion. Yet it concludes with some mealy-mouthed stuff about it not being worth worried about health risks from drinking, even though doctors […] [Original post on mastodon.social]
That said, even the doctor I talked to who’s authored studies finding some benefit, said, “This is not an elixir.” He was clear that his work shouldn’t be read as saying, “Alcohol is going to reduce your chance of diabetes, improve your heart health, or what have you.”

So, you’re saying I shouldn’t start drinking, hoping it will make me a healthier person.

Yes. The doctors I’ve spoken to have said things like, “I would never tell somebody to start drinking because it’s not going to help you.”

The basic thing to remember, though, is if you’re a light drinker, any potential problems caused by alcohol aren’t something worth worrying about.
People should be aware of the risks but shouldn’t panic about them. Really, my two big takeaways on alcohol are: Heavy drinking is dangerous, and it’s easy to drink too much. Those are the things to watch out for.
