Next time you find yourself feeling sad or discouraged, take a moment to enjoy this photo of now-Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson’s daughter, beaming at her moms during Her Honor’s historic confirmation as the 1st Black Woman to serve on the United States Supreme Court. #Blacksky

This is true at scale. A study found that Black profiles on LinkedIn are 13% less likely to have their connection request accepted as compared to white profiles. There is also work by sociologists David Pedulla and Devah Pager that shows that job network formation is racialized. #econsky #blacksky

Abstract
We assess the impact of discrimination on Black individuals’ job networks across the United States using a two-stage field experiment with 400+ fictitious LinkedIn profiles. In the first stage, we vary race via AI-generated images only and find that Black profiles’ connection requests are 13% less likely to be accepted. Based on users’ CVs, we find widespread discrimination across social groups. In the second stage, we exogenously endow Black and white profiles with the same networks and ask connected users for career advice. We find no evidence of direct discrimination in information provision. However, when taking into account differences in the composition and size of networks, Black profiles receive substantially fewer replies. Our findings suggest that gatekeeping is a key driver of Black–white disparities.

The Tinker Bell triplet captured by ESO

Using ESO's Very Large Telescope, an international team of astronomers has discovered a stunning rare case of a triple merger of galaxies. This system, which astronomers have dubbed 'The Bird' - although it also bears resemblance with a cosmic Tinker Bell - is composed of two massive spiral galaxies and a third irregular galaxy.

In this image, a 30-min VLT/NACO K-band exposure has been combined with archive HST/ACS B and I-band images to produce a three-colour image of the 'Bird' interacting galaxy system. The NACO image has allowed astronomers to not only see the two previously known galaxies, but to identify a third, clearly separate component, an irregular, yet fairly massive galaxy that seems to form stars at a frantic rate.

As gamers, we're used to companies squeezing every last penny out of us: * Microtransactions * Season passes * Loot boxes * Live service games But this most recent trend of "Play 3 Days Early if you have the super-duper expensive version" really rubs me the wrong way.

My 2nd great grandfather, Charles Vavasseur was born enslaved in Louisiana in 1835, became free as a result of the Civil War, and later won a state senate seat during the 1872-1874 session. He worked primarily as a tailor and founded the True Friends Society of La Pointe.

I know this makes me sound like an old fuddy duddy, but making my favorite animation list makes me realize just how much I miss hand drawn animation. The little imperfections, the warmth, the lines squiggling here and there. You could feel the humanity in every frame. Everything looks so clean now.
