The US score lost 3 points & stands at 81/100. Is 3 points a lot or a little? - Most countries experience no score change every year (This year 54 ⬆️, 35 📉, but 106 no change) - Big point drops are driven by coups & wars. - Avg of all Free countries over the last 20 years has moved by 1 %.

I encourage everyone to read the report - there's lots more there. It took us 10+ months to make during what was, to put it mildly, a hard year for civil society and democracy watchers. But my team and I are very proud of what we have accomplished. And we hope it makes a difference.

There's really good momentum building here that is the result of years of research and advocacy and community building about a topic few outside of academic circles were working on 5 years ago. It ironically comes at a time when funding and support for work like this is disappearing.

With Yoon removed from office today, by my count that makes 34 democratic leaders convicted since 2010. Only one—Trump—faced no real consequences. Trump's actions weren't uncommon. What was exceptional was how our institutions failed to hold him accountable.
A table titled “Convicted World Leaders” with columns: Name, Country, Role, Year, Reason, Status, and Consequence. It lists political leaders from various countries who were convicted of crimes ranging from corruption and bribery to abuse of power and attempted coups. Most rows have a red background, signaling convictions with prison time or bans. One row is highlighted in green and features Donald Trump (USA, President), listed as convicted in 2023 for Jan 6, Corruption, Abuse of Power, Documents, Election Interference, with the consequence noted as No formal ban or sentencing/Granted Immunity.
