Here’s Mike McGuire doing his auctioneer duty with his son. Mike was president of the student council here when he was in high school, then was the youngest ever Healdsburg City Council member. Now President Pro Tem of the Senate, running for US Congress. He has my vote.

Went to the annual Wine Country to the Rescue fundraiser. The event begins with the presentation of the colors and then the President of the California Senate (a local boy!) is the auctioneer. The event raises close to $1m a year.

I got 50 fruits from my two trees last year and this year will double or triple that. I make a mean pomegranate chutney out of them, serve it with curried beans (using South Indian masala mixes and Andhra red chilis plus curry leaves).
Two pomegranate trees. The one in front has over 50 blooms that are fruiting. In the back by the street is the second and larger tree.

The wall over the basement stairs has water, electric, gas pipes going all over. A 50 amp breakout box with a big box of science magnet on it. The Mac mini external disk is a Small box but it has a “this machine kills facists label on it.

The 15 kilos box has been deboxed into 80 spice jars and 70 deli containers, all labeled and sealed. Shipping some to legal clinics and lawyers who represent me, the rest I’m bringing to some Watch Duty events, where I’m an advisor, so thought it was appropriate to bring some fire with me.
54 small spice jars, each with the great seal of the seal of approval. Includes 20 jars of my homemade herbal masala. A shot of my counter with over 50 8-ounce round deli containers with ladies, snacks, mango leather. A bunch of spices jars are on the shelf. A 25 kg box all taped up and festooned with air bills and stickers and customs manifests.

All the lavender is now blooming. Figs are green and getting bigger.
A fig tree with small green figs forming . Behind it is a fence with a row of lavender in bloom. At the end is an olive tree. Lavender in front and behind a dwarf nectarine.

Pomegranates going to be plentiful this year! I grind the seeds, add chili, tamarind, beets (so it stays red), chilis, and sesame seeds to make a chutney.
A ten foot tall pomegranate tree with dozens of blooms. Close up shows a dozen red flowers and one pomegranate starting to form.

Friend of mine needed a bluetooth mouse, so I rooted around in the bin and said "aha" and hauled out Logitech M510, which I later determined I had purchased July 20, 2011. This will do nicely, waste not, want not.
A black Logitech Mouse with no wires and a click wheel.

Beginning to hang and dry herbs. Starting with marjoram and sage. I have 4 of these racks, so it’s going to smell really great in there. Oregano and lavender up next.
A wood ceiling has a wire rack hanging from it. On it are 8 bunches of marjoram and 4 of sage tied with string. Behind the rack is a large commercial refrigerator full of drinks and pickles with “big box of science” magnet on it. The wall is full of photos of Thai markets.

I always worry when flying high in the air and see rabbits go flying by. Seems dangerous.
A rabbit apparently flying through space.

Got my new office up and running. This will do.
The bar windows are open, there is a glass of beer on the shiny redwood bar, looking I to the kitchen where a refrigerator is lit up and contains 100 jars of pickles and some wine and champagne. Long sii hi it shows a 12 foot granite table with five chairs, looking on the bar.

Justice Gautam Patel, a beloved judge, recently retired. He escorted me in to meet the justices. He is talking to Dr. Uma Narayan, recently retired as the Librarian of the Supreme Court of India, who also attended the meeting.

The main courtroom in the Bombay High Court. This is where Tilak stood and made his case. History happened here.
The wooden chairs and benches for the spectators. Picture of Tilak in the back. The galleries are high above the main floor. The benches for the judges and the clerks sit below the main podium. The courtroom soars 30-40 feet, with a glass atrium at the top. A large chandelier hangs down and there are galleries ringing the floor.

Lawrence Liang and I will be speaking at the Bangalore Club tomorrow night on "The Future of Libraries." If you are a member and obey the dress code, we would be pleased to see you there!
The Future of Libraries
February 19, Bangalore Club

Public libraries played a vital role in the fight for the liberation of India. But, has the Internet made them irrelevant? In this talk on the 125th anniversary of the venerable Bangalore Club library, two of the founders of the Servants of Knowledge will argue that libraries are not only relevant in our modern world, they form the bedrock of democracy, education, and economic opportunity. In the context of post-colonial countries, libraries serve as vital democratic institutions that promote constitutional values including equality, and empower citizens to participate actively in political and cultural deliberations. In this talk Lawrence Liang and Carl Malamud will discuss their efforts at the Servants of Knowledge to create a public library of over 6 lakh books plus over 6 lakh issues of the Official Gazettes of India. A large poster on a brass poster stand outside the columned entrance to the venerable Bangalore Club library. There are lots of potted plants.

In order to maintain consistency in it's approach to defending the American Way Of Life, Congress should act NOW to ban Tic Tac and Tuk Tuk.
A box of artificially flavored tic tac mints in "Freshmints" flavor. Contains 65% more product! A three-wheeler "tuk-tuk" in Bangkok.

February is when the really crazy good Andhra Pradesh red chilis are ready. The fresh ones have limited shelf life, but they pickle up like omg you wouldn't believe, and the pickles have a long shelf life. I just placed an order for 25kg of pickles. These are blow your head off hot, but very tasty.
A dozen jars of pickles from India in my fridge from the last batch. These are 4-oz jars, each has the great seal of the seal of approval on them. The "very red chutney" is related to the Andhra Pradesh Red Chili Pickle, but isn't quite a hot.

Me standing in the Supreme Court of India library. That’s the preamble to the constitution behind me. They take the constitution seriously here. Amazing library. We might be working there. I’ll return in February to discuss with court officials.
The library is four floors of books looking out into an open atrium. The preamble is four stories tall. I look like a dwarf. View of the four stories of the books. The preamble’s on the left, the four stories to the right. The atrium is drenched in sunlight.

Spending a few hours in one of Bangalore’s famous parks. You can sit and listen to the sounds of horns honking. Very peaceful.
Yew out the window of my uber. Two wheelers, three wheeler, buses. Nobody moving. Traffic at a standstill, but everybody honking.

As you enter the court you see a large picture of Gandhi with the iconic quote. I couldn’t help myself … turned to the court official, a Deputy Registrar, and said “you know, Gandhi never said that?” This is true … he didn’t. It was in a biography about him, he never said it.
Photo of Gandhi and “Be the change you wish to see in the world.” Mahatma Gandhi.

Had a spectacular visit to the Supreme Court last week. Got VIP treatment through security, spent two hours with the Chief Librarian and a Deputy Registrar.
Tue entrance to the supreme court lined with lawyers in black robes, an immaculate lawn, and the dome leading one in Tue background. Me standing in the four story atrium, behind me is a huge page of the preamble to the constitution, lady justice, and the Indian national symbol (the four headed lions). The four floors of books open up onto the massive atrium and the sun streams in from above.

In my second week in India for this trip. My hotel is in the middle of a 20-acre rain forest with 50 species of butterflies. Also, five minute walk to our scan center in Gandhi Bhavan. My last trip of the year … doing 93 nights in this hotel in 2024.
A peeple tree looms over a nice lawn and behind it is a thicket of fronds. A bath through the rain forest with thick ferns and trees lining the walk. Bunch of banana leaves in the center of a lawn.
