I did it. I’m totally off of 1Password, and totally on to BitWarden. I’m running my own VaultWarden server. I’m going to work through all the friction and then switch my wife over. #BitWarden #1Password #Ethics #DHH #Fascism

I have one wing out of commission: de Quervain release surgery on my left wrist makes that hand unusable for about a month. The pain is a three. The inconvenience is a ten. Typing is impossible, so ... I dictate through a local model in Spokenly (Distil-Whisper Large 3.5), and where needed […]

Why direnv at all: it loads and unloads a project's environment as you move between directories. Env vars, PATH additions, and the virtualenv all live in one .envrc in the repo, so there is no "did I activate the right venv?" and no settings leaking from one project into the next. It works with […]

I'm super excited! My `layout uv` PR was merged into direnv and shipped in v2.38.1. Jonas Chevalier was the final reviewer, decider, and he merged and released my PR. Many people contributed advice. I tried to write something that I needed myself, and in such a way it would be useful to everyone […]

For decades, I loved and used 1Password across multiple OSs and platforms. It’s the first thing I install when I bring up a new system. I gave them several weeks to fix their decisions. They doubled-down. Life requires compromise; but that is **not** something that extends to my personal values […]

@cartocalypse When you define things in Python, either you want others to see them or not. A single initial underscore is one of the things that gently communicates "this is not for you". Omitting it from __init__.py is another. No protection is afforded by the Python itself. If you require […]

Rules are **tools**. They are guidelines that usually lead to the goal(s). Goals are the important part. Goals have value. When a rule in a particular situation **doesn't** lead you towards the goal, it's the rule that must bend, not your movement towards the goal. A very simplified example […]

Courage to try, to start, to do right even when right is not easy, to learn, to change my mind when I learn better, to stick to my guns while evidence supports it, to be wrong and admit it, to keep going when I feel like quitting, to give up when evidence says to stop

When someone tells you how to solve their problem, they're almost always wrong. Not because they're foolish. Because the reason they need you at all is that you're better at How, in this particular domain, than they are. But their "ask" is completely upside-down! Does their How even achieve […]
